While the Allentown, Pennsylvania, noisecore act Pissed Jeans could be tagged as nothing more than a bunch of knuckle-headed dudes screaming at the system, to do so would be to underestimate a band with considerable smarts, twisted though they may be. The Jeans' sound owes a considerable debt to the screeching metallic punk of various AmRep and early Touch & Go acts, as well as vintage Black Flag, and lyrically the Jeans spew a similar frustrated, whiteman-blues bile. The band's targets, however, are unique to new-millennium America: latte-sipping, iPod-sporting liberals are just as guilty for our horrible consumerism-as-Ritalin malaise as churchgoing Bushies. Our world is bloated, ugly, and bursting at the seams with disposable everything, sayeth the Jeans. And HOPE FOR MEN is the beautifully wretched sound of the inevitable pop.

Rolling Stone (p.98) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "This music is incredibly violent, yet unimpeachably cheery....So many bands try to nail this sound, and so few get close, but the Jeans are absolutely prime." Spin (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[B]lown-amp sludge punk....Matt Korvette's hotfoot howl stays safely buried under landfills of guitar grumble and bar-fight drum pound..." Uncut (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[B]eneath their noisy surface lurk subtleties of expression great ideas." Alternative Press (p.174) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Equal parts aggressive, discordant and experimental, the 10 hypnotic tracks on HOPE FOR MEN are equally reminiscent of Black Flag, Sonic Youth and the Jesus Lizard..." Magnet (p.119) - "'People Person' opens with Fry wringing sounds out of his guitar that could only be replicated by throwing a metal trash can from a 20th-story window....Korvette spews bile in an atonal rant that would make the Jesus Lizard's David Yow green with envy." Hope For Me album
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never ...

Hope For Me songs
$8.85 As wryly noted on LCD Soundsystem's debut 2002 single, "Losing My Edge," in the underground music arms race, aging hipsters are losing ground against young upstarts who are (perhaps) unaware of their own influences. And if influences are the stuff with which post-millennial musicians are made, Murphy has trumped us all. Touching on reference points ranging from disco, krautrock, Bowie, house, and post-punk, to singer-songwriter types, SOUND OF SILVER is a veritable catalog of left-field cool. Leading off with the slow-boil, hypnotic opener, "Get Innocuous"--which sounds a bit like a reprise of "Losing My Edge" crossed with Kraftwerk's "The Robots"--the album moves from dance-floor stormers to plaintive piano numbers without batting an eye. On "North American Scum," Murphy lampoons the often mistaken idea that LCD Soundsystem is a U.K. act; his nasal vocal echoing Jonathan Richman as he declares "for those of you who think we're from England--we're ...
