(2 Customer Reviews)
Southern California's Tiger Army has built a loyal following with their gutsy, stripped down psychobilly sound. MUSIC FROM REGIONS BEYOND, the band's fourth album, contains more of their classic, punk-influenced rock & roll, yet also branches out into country, synth-pop, metal, and balladry. The experiments aren't always successful, but the band's efforts make for a diverse and energetic listen, proving that Tiger Army aren't necessarily married to the formula that gave them their start, and that their sound can encompass any number of styles.

Entertainment Weekly (p.77) - "[They] bash away at pompadour-punk grooves with melodic abandon." -- Grade: B+ Alternative Press (p.166) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "MUSIC FROM REGIONS BEYOND closes with 'Where The Moss Slowly Grows,' which adds lap steel guitar for an almost Western swing feel....An enjoyable broad-minded slab o' psychobilly-plus." | | Buzzcocks Love Bites CD (1978) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Music From Regions Beyond album
$9.79 On the Buzzcocks' sophomore effort, LOVE BITES, the band, and lead singer/songwriter Pete Shelley in particular, go beyond the bratty punk provocations of songs such as "Orgasm Addict," becoming masters of perfectly crafted punk-pop. The presence of "Ever Fallen in Love," one of the Buzzcocks' finest moments, is enough to testify to this fact. The tune's wonderfully sculpted major/minor-key shifting, bouncing verses, and unforgettable chorus, not to mention Shelley's vulnerable vocals, raise the aggressive pop song to an art form.
LOVE BITES is full of other gems, too, including "Real World," the lead-off track, which builds from a beautifully chugging rhythm into a fully fleshed rock attack, and "Nostalgia," a classic minor-key progression imbued with propulsive energy. "Just Lust" and "Sixteen Again" flirt with simple song structures, but the tunes are so smartly put together that their surfaces can be misleading. The 2001 reissue of LOVE BITES adds four bonus singles (including two more examples of peerless punk-pop perfection in "Love You More" and "Promises," as well as the delightfully cheeky "Noise Annoys"), enhancing this already-classic punk-pop album.
More musically accomplished, more obsessively self-questioning, and with equally energetic yet sometimes gloomy performances, Love Bites finds Buzzcocks coming into their own. With Howard Devoto and his influence now fully worked out of the band's system, Pete Shelley is the clearly predominant voice, with the exception of Steve Diggle's first lead vocal on an album track, the semi-acoustic, perversely sprightly "Love Is Lies." Though the song received even further acclaim on Singles Going Steady, "Ever Fallen in Love," for many the band's signature song, appears here. With its note-perfect blend of romance gone wrong; a weirdly catchy, treated lead guitar line; and Shelley's wounded singing, it deserves its instant classic status, but it's only one of many highlights. The opening "Real World" is one of the band's strongest: a chunky, forceful, yet crisp band performance leads into a strong Shelley lyric about unrequited love and life. "Nostalgia"'s strikingly mature, inventive lyrics about where one's life can lead and the sometimes-charging, sometimes-quietly tense, heartbroken "Nothing Left" are two other standouts. ...

$10.15 THEIR ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTSEven though a computer can generate sounds, it cannot reproduce the nuances of human expression; nor can it make judgments for improvements and changes before, during, and after performances. With their electronic string and wind instruments, Tim and Maggie are able to take electronic music to a new level of expression. Tim’s primary instruments are two electric guitars. His Rickenbacker 12-string can produce sounds difficult to imitate on a 6-stringed guitar. His Les-Paul 6-string is equipped with a GR midi output device that allows access to sounds otherwise unattainable with guitar alone. Several pedals add to the variety of effects. Maggie’s instrument is a Yamaha WX5 midi wind controller. It’s fingering system is similar to a saxophone’s, while it’s range extends over 7 octaves. It is extremely responsive to breath pressure which allows for a large dynamic range, and it can access any sound they can program into their tone generators. THE CATEGORY LABELTheir music doesn’t quite fit the labels of “techno” or “electronica” because of the absence of percussive loops. For the most part, Tim & Maggie feel that “music is music”, but they finally settled on the label “Techno-Folk” for their electronic music, a term first jokingly coined by Paul Stookey. INFLUENCESThe key factors that prompted Tim to write electronic compositions were his electronic music training at CCM and art-performers who avoided anything written after the 19th century. (Electronic/computer generated music does not need to rely much on reticent musicians.) Shortly after receiving his doctorate, he became captivated with the 5 string banjo, which led him to meet Pete Seeger. Pete encouraged him to use his talents ...
