Ryan Oliver is one of many promising Canadian jazz musicians to emerge on the scene at the dawn of the 21st century, joined by four of his countrymen for his solid recording debut as a leader. "Tune for Bernie" is his delightful reworking of Bernie Miller's "Bernie's Tune" (made famous by Gerry Mulligan in the early '50s) which also salutes his pianist on the session (veteran Bernie Senensky), while his turbulent "Solidarity" is a driving post-bop vehicle. Oliver also proves effective as an interpreter of ballads like "It's Easy to Remember" (where his tone recalls early-'60s John Coltrane, though his spacious delivery allows the music plenty of breathing space), and a peppy celebration of "The End of a Love Affair" that adds trumpeter Jake Wilkinson as a foil. He stretches the envelope a bit with "Never Forget," a marvelous feature with drummer Bob McLaren, with Senensky adding some dreamy piano underneath the leader's emotional sax and McLaren's surging drums. Ryan Oliver's first CD is well worth investigating. ~ Ken Dryden

More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a steady, sensuous backbeat, with octave passages and a buoyant rhythm feel that echo Wes Montgomery. Despite these similarities, White displays a distinctive sound, with blues and Spanish influences perfuming his romantic phrases. Pianist and composer David Berkman plays and writes in a style that is quite personal and unique, though at times it harks back explicitly to such masters of pianistic impressionism as Bill Evans and early-period Keith Jarrett. Generally, this tendency works very much in his favor: on the aptly titled "Cells," for example, he starts out with disconnected, almost pointillistic snippets of melody and eventually weaves them together into a composition that is both sweetly attractive and quite harmonically complex; on the gorgeous "Quilt," Berkman and his quartet begin with a more straightforward melody and then deconstruct it.
