| | Nick Drake Family Tree CD - Import Nick Drake Discography of CDs
Nick Drake fans, music history buffs, and people who enjoy haunting and spare folk songs sung with winsome wit and heart will rejoice at this 2007 release, a compendium of 28 never-released recordings by the late folk hero. Recorded on reel-to-reel and cassette, these tracks are primitive but warm, and include not only the young songwriter's earliest original work, but also covers of songs by his influences, like Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, Bert Jansch, and even Mozart. With only three albums as his legacy, FAMILY TREE is an important addition to the Nick Drake canon.
2007 rarities collection from one of the most influential UK Folk artists of all time. Family Tree tells the story of Nick Drake's musical development in the years prior to his debut album Five Leaves Left in 1969. It features lo-fi recordings made on a reel-to-reel tape recorder at his home, Far Leys in Tanworth In Arden, as well as eight songs recorded on cassette during his sojourn in Aix En Provence. The inclusion of two songs by his mother Molly Drake bears testament to her influence on her son. His final performances on Family Tree, 'Day Is Done' and 'Way To Blue', recorded by his Cambridge friend and arranger Robert Kirby are the end of one story and the beginning of another. Family Tree comprises mostly other people's compositions: the Folk and Blues tunes used by many a young guitarist in the '60s, attempting to master the fretboard. Nick played Jackson C. Frank, Bert Jansch, Dave Van Ronk and, of course, Bob Dylan. Booklet printed on 'bible ' paper for initial pressings only! 28 tracks. Island.Spin (p.100) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "A polished release of oft-bootlegged home recordings....All fragile as pressed leaves..." Uncut (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "FAMILY TREE is heavy on country- or folk-blues from the Warwickshire delta....Essential listening for anybody in thrall to the spell of Saint Nick." CMJ (p.48) - "[T]he 11 original compositions on the album showcase his preternatural sense of melody and a comfort for the folk idiom..." No Depression (p.84) - "A kind of aural home movie....The album is worth hearing for the window it opens on Drake's formative period." Nick Drake Family Tree Songs Family Tree Review

| | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
Family Tree music CDs
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast him squarely in the Mark Eitzel/Smog camp of unrelenting self-effacement and misery. The combination of Smith's internal angst and his melodic pop constructions makes for a compelling artistic tension.

| | Elliott Smith Figure 8 CD (2000)
Family Tree songs
$11.99 On his first record since his Oscar nomination courtesy director Gus Van Zandt's use of his music in the film "Good Will Hunting," Elliott Smith returns with another album's worth of gorgeous misery. Like Nick Drake before him, Smith has the ability to conjure beautifully poignant pathos, wrapping it in an elaborately arranged package worthy of a George Martin or Brian Wilson. Working with Beck/Foo Fighters producer Rob Schnapf, Smith uses Abbey Road Studios for some of these sessions, dressing up his tortured lyrics with orchestral arrangements that avoid any hint of mawkishness.

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Family Tree album
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' ...
| | Elliott Smith From A Basement On The Hill CD (2004)
Family Tree CD music
$14.49 Elliott Smith's death in 2003 left a cavernous hole in the world of popular music. Tender, intimate, and painfully honest, the songs in Smith's catalogue capture the fragility of human existence with rare, breathtaking beauty. On his first posthumous release, Smith reaffirms his status as an extraordinarily gifted artist, giving fans yet another reason to mourn his tragic loss.
Conceived as an ambitious double album, FROM A BASEMENT ON THE HILL was ultimately narrowed down to 15 tracks by Smith's close friends, producer Rob Schnapf (Beck's MELLOW GOLD, Smith's X/O) and musician Joanna Bolme (the Minders, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks). The result is a heartbreaking collection of songs that plays like a retrospective of Smith's entire career. "Strung Out Again" reflects the early edge of ROMAN CANDLE; "Last Hour" recalls the bittersweet melodies of ELLIOTT ...
| | Eve Goldberg Crossing The Water CD (2003) (Import) Canada
Family Tree music CDs
$16.15 When a folksinger is described as being "particularly drawn to music that carries the social history of ordinary people in North America," that's not usually a good sign; too often, it means you can expect songs that put message before music, leaving both diminished. Not so in the case of Eve Goldberg, who is as likely to sing a jazzy retro-pop tune about the joys of staying in bed on Sunday morning or a weepy country song about chains around the heart as she is a heavy-handed social commentary. She's fully capable of the latter, of course, as her clunky a cappella rendition of Linda Allen's "Rosie the Riveter" makes clear, but for the most part she sticks with material that is both lighter and more emotionally ...
