Artificial Perfect album
$8.29 If this new solo album by the legendary writer of "Light My Fire" is supposed to be the soundtrack to a movie, someone must have spilled the canister on the cutting room floor because this album is all over the place! From the dry, slow drums and repetitive licks of "Snake Oil" to the heavy and tribal pounds and gargly backing vocals of "Out of the Mood," this cuts from scene to scene and from idea to idea with little rhyme or rhythm. "Idolatry" is jazzy but in a sax-y way. Perhaps it is the soundtrack to the love scene of the mind Krieger appears wont to create. Similarly, the noir-y accelerations of "Missionary Jam" suggest a bungled chase scene. The beguilingly foreboding '80s guitar play of "Haunted Spouse" (which in itself sounds like a movie title) and the funky warning of "Red Alert" are both appropriately (or at least cleverly) entitled, but that may be the best that can be said of them. Taking from other films and shows, "Psychadelicate" goes from the boudoir to the West Side ...

Artificial Perfect CD music
$12.79 Instrumentals in metal are nothing new (heck, Metallica used to put one on every record!), but what is a new occurrence is the veritable wave of purely instrumental bands that seem to have spewed out of nothing in the waning years of the first decade of the ol' 21st. Some, like Pelican, are bands that have just simply brushed aside the need for a vocalist, letting guitar parts handle such melodies and harmonies and keeping a basic song structure that is, for the most part, band-driven. Others, like the "guitar collective" that is Tone, are more, well, collective in sound, sort of a wall of music, with guitars layered on top of guitars, all playing the same chord changes to produce something that sounds more like heavy-duty ripples emanating from a common center. If there is one band that manages to capture the grey area that the aforementioned bands create ...

Artificial Perfect album
$10.59 Australian trio the Devastations debut with Coal, an album steeped in the outback-gothic vibe perfected by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. A similar set of influences is at play in the Devastations sound: the Gun Club, Bryan Ferry, Lee Hazelwood. (On a more recent tip, American Music Club and Elliott Smith are also worth mentioning, especially in lead singer Conrad Standish's strained croon; "The Night I Couldn't Stop Crying" is a particularly Mark Eitzel-like performance.) Although plainly derivative of their shared influences, the Devastations do make each song their own, through unexpected touches like the playful rhythm box samba beat that animates the opening "Sex and Mayhem" and the Western twang-guitar shuffle of "Take You Home." That said, an entire album's worth of little other than low-register vocals, minor-key tunes and self-consciously minimalist arrangements does get a bit draggy by the final third. ~ Stewart Mason
