Now A Lover album
$10.99 Long before Madonna started changing hairstyles between albums, David Bowie set the standard (and continues to do so) for chameleonic music styles that go beyond mere hair dye. CHANGESBOWIE is the perfect road map that allows the listener to hear the different pitstops Bowie made into the mid-'80s. Throughout the '70s, Bowie's personas included space alien ("Ziggy Stardust," "Suffragette City"), theatrical raconteur ("Rebel, Rebel"), blue-eyed soulster ("Young Americans") and Thin White Duke ("Golden Years"). After spending time in Berlin under self-imposed exile ("Heroes"), he returned to the West and within a few short years, David Bowie was back on the top of the charts thanks to a dance-rock collaboration with Nile Rodgers ("Let's Dance"). Bowie's constant need to reinvent himself is so pervasive that upon originally releasing this collection on Rykodisc, he returned to the studio and recorded an updated, '90s remix of "Fame" that sounds as if Art ...

Now A Lover music CDs
$11.09 Given the extraordinary amount of airplay HOTEL CALIFORNIA garnered in the mid-70s and early '80s, it comes as quite a surprise to hear how fresh this recording sounds on DCC's 24k gold disc version. Familiar tracks benefit from the enhanced soundstage and control room-clarity of this exceptional digital remastering, revealing something of the actual recording studio room sound on many tracks.
A steady growth suddenly mushroomed into a monster as the Eagles, along with Fleetwood Mac, epitomized AOR in the early 70s. This record is supposedly a concept album but most of the purchasers merely enjoyed the accessible songs while driving down to the coast in their Volkswagen Caravanettes with 2.4 children. Joe Walsh was added to give gutsy guitar in the wake of the country flavour of Bernie Leaden, while Randy Meisner grew ...

| | Mahavishnu Orchestra Birds Of Fire CD (1972) Remastered
Now A Lover music CDs
$6.79 Guitarist John McLaughlin was in on the birth of jazz-rock fusion, having played with both Miles Davis and Tony Williams' Lifetime in the early '70s. McLaughlin applied what he'd learned from these artists to his own pioneering fusion band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This second effort is the Orchestra's definitive recording. The tempestuous mix of jazz, rock, and Eastern influences is at its height here, and all of the players in this notoriously ego-plagued group challenge themselves--and each other--to push the envelope.
The themes, generally stated by McLaughlin and searing electric violinist Jerry Goodman, sound regal, unfolding in an elegant, magisterial way. Drummer Billy Cobham (another Miles alumnus) provides pounding polyrhythms over which McLaughlin and Goodman mix it up with keyboardist Jan Hammer. Hammer's synthesizer solos blazed a new trail for the synthesizer as a lead instrument, particularly in his guitar-like use of pitch-bend. The pastoral, acoustic strains of "Thousand Island Park" provide a brief respite before the listener is hurled back into the firestorm. "Hope" could be a distant cousin of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir," ...

Now A Lover songs
$12.05 After the abstract funk experimentation of REMAIN IN LIGHT and SPEAKING IN TONGUES, the Heads decided to return to their roots with LITTLE CREATURES. They abandoned the modal, polyrhythmic approach in favor of the two-guitars/4/4 pop structures of yore. While LITTLE CREATURES is the band's most accessible, radio-friendly album, it's not a step backwards by any means, because as they return to the quirky "new wave" style that made them famous, they bring a well-earned sophistication (both harmonic and lyrical) to the table. These advances allow the band to knock out a crop of winners, like the anti-anthem "Road To Nowhere," the semi-mystical (but still damn catchy) "And She Was" and the we've-got-a-baby-now, ...
