$9.75 The Christmas season is a perennial juxtaposition of the old and the new. Accordingly, the blockbuster Robert Zemeckis film THE POLAR EXPRESS blends a children's book by Chris Van Allsburg, the classic recordings of Bing Crosby's day, and state-of-the art computer animation into a seamless, organic whole. On the soundtrack, new compositions by Glen Ballard and Alan Silvestri coexist with such timeless classics as "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland". Here the former tunes become instant classics by association, as the latter gain up-to-date relevance in a new context. Frank Sinatra and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler are seldom heard on the same album, yet here they ...

$8.99 Reflecting the thin line between sacred and secular music that's particularly prevalent in the world of soul, THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS soundtrack modernizes this dichotomy, which has been tackled by legends like Prince, Sam Cooke, and Al Green. Given that the film's story is based on a plot about a crooked ad exec forming a choir in order to collect ...

| | Metropolitan Klezmer Surprising Finds CD
Kiminishika Kikoenai Soundtrack album
$13.69 There are better-known American klezmer bands, but fame doesn't necessarily mean the same as quality, and Metropolitan Klezmer are up there with the very best musically. Their third release, Surprising Finds, is also their most daring, and most varied, where they not only delve deeper into their Yiddish roots, but also Jewish Socialism, once a major force in the U.S., but long since vanished. And so, alongside recordings of Deborah Karpel's grandfather, and old live tunes (including "Howie's Doyna & Hora" from 1994), there's a remarkable reworking on the Broadway standard "Pick a Pocket or Two," reworked as a Balkan brass gem, while "Soviet Yiddish Theater Suite" digs back into history to show how Yiddish culture flourished briefly in the Soviet Union. As much as involving listeners with some fabulous music (just hear the beautiful "Dreaming Wizard," for example), the band is also intent on making connections to the past -- all the way down to a very well-thought-out CD booklet. Come for the music and you'll stay for the history lesson -- and enjoy it just as much. ~ Chris Nickson
Metropolitan Klezmer's third CD is their most expressive disc yet, encompassing dynamic live and studio tracks, a wide range of approaches to traditionals (embracing Greek, Turkish, Rumanian, Russian, and Arabic roots of klezmer styles). The disc won a 2004 Outmusic Award for Outstanding New Recording/Instrumental -- though we also include many fabulous vocals, including lesser-known treasures. Interspersed among the band's studio tracks and live cuts is a series of excerpted archival gems. The group even revisits "Pick a Pocket or Two" from Oliver!, with a version that is surprising indeed.Fun and virtuosic, the eight-piece ensemble's tight and imaginative arrangements bring new life to these pieces, adding trombone for ...

$13.15 Desmond 'Dez I' Boyd Biography Persistent, determined, and focus are words that describe this Jamaican 'griot' (story-teller) and extra-ordinary artist, Desmond 'Dez I' Boyd. It was made remarkably clear as he confidently stated his purpose in the year 1999 at the Tastee Contest finals 'mi nah stop 'til mi get di trophy!' What judge could resist that kind of determination! it was no surprise when he was declared the winner of the Tastee's final in 1999. It is this kind of true grit Desmond is applying in taking his career to another level along with planning and execution strategies developed by his management team at New Creation Management a unit of the Atlanta, Georgia based Sterling Communications Group, Inc. It all started for Boyd in church, at the tender age of four (4). He was very active in the youth choir at the church he attended in the district of his birth Harmons, Manchester on the paradise island of Jamaica. As he grew older, Dez I's love affair with music never ceased. He has performed on numerous community events, boosting his confidence, until he finally took on the challenges of top talent contest series such as; the Popular Song Competition where he was a finalist and the long running Tastee Talent Contest. Desmond's first Tastee's effort took him to the semi-finals!but that didn't deter, he never stopped until he won the coveted trophy. After copping the grand finals title in Jamaica, Boyd went on to capture third (3rd) place in the Tastee UK Talent Competition 2000, and also walked away with the Best Original Lyrics prize. Wanting to launch mainstream in the music business Desmond Boyd a/k/a Dez I worked with producer Courtney Murray, but 'things were kind of slow'. Being a good friend Murray pointed out to him that if he saw 'a better opportunity' he should 'take it.' Boyd did just that. He called his childhood pal Sherwin Sterling, CEO of the Atlanta Georgia based label New Creation Records, ...
