THE STRANGER: Orson Welles directed and starred in THE STRANGER, a tense black-and-white thriller that Welles made for maverick producer Sam Spiegel. Welles portrays Charles Rankin, a respected academic at a prominent Connecticut college. He seems to have the perfect life: a beautiful new wife, Mary (Loretta Young); and a charming home in a small town that holds him in high esteem. Enter Mr. Wilson (Edward G. Robinson), a detective on the hunt for Nazi war criminal Franz Kindler. The appearance of Mr. Wilson threatens to reveal that underneath this idyllic veneer is a secret that could tear everything apart.
Although many of Welles's most interesting scenes wound up on the cutting-room floor when Spiegel reedited the film, THE STRANGER is still multilayered, complex, and fascinating. The scenes between Welles and Robinson are intellectually gripping, leading up to the stylized, shocking conclusion. As with so many of Welles's films, he was unhappy with the final result, but the viewer won't be. It would be most interesting to see the film as Welles intended it to be, but in the meantime, this version of THE STRANGER is a marvel. Theatrical Release: July, 1946
An uncredited John Huston had a large hand in the development of the script.
The producers, led by Sam Spiegel, cut many of Welles's favorite, more complex scenes. Welles was never happy with the final cut.
THE STRANGER was the first Hollywood film to use real footage from World War II concentration camps.
Welles originally wanted Agnes Moorehead to play the character eventually played by Edward G. Robinson.
THE STRANGER was the only Welles-directed film to show a profit upon its initial theatrical release.
THE STRANGER is perhaps the most mainstream of Welles's films; he shot it within the studio system, shooting it by the book.
Konstantin Shayne (Meinike) was Akim Tamiroff's brother-in-law; Tamiroff starred in Welles's MR. ARKADIN. Stranger Movie Review classic film noir Edward G in pursuit, Orson Welles pursued, Lorette Young blinded by love. A tidy little film, plausible diaslogue and situations. Submitted by LB (Manchester, NH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
First class entertainment!! Apart from the never-relenting tension and continuous suspense this movie is memorable for the high class dramatic performance of the 2 leading characters
the great Edward G. Robinson, and the genius Orson Welles. Highly recommended! Submitted by y.ben-david (Givatayim, Israel.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Holds Your Attention From Beginning to End This film is quite a gem. It holds your attention from beginning to end. It clearly was not a big budget venture, but it uses economy to great advantage. The movie unfolds neatly and swiftly. The script is top notch. The camera work almost flawless. If you love suspense, if you love Orson Welles as an actor or as a director, if you liked Edward G. Robinson in Double Indemnity, if you think Loretta Young is beautiful, or if you just want to see a good yarn, get this film... Submitted by Ramsees7 (Central New Jersey) Was This Review Helpful? $16.09 Though James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan also starred together in NEXT TIME WE LOVE, THE MORTAL STORM, and THE SHOPWORN ANGEL, their best pairing is this classic romance directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Here the stars play two sales clerks in a Budapest shop who dislike each other, but inadvertently fall in love while corresponding as pseudonymous pen pals.THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER was later remade as the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan romantic comedy YOU'VE GOT MAIL, but it's hard to compare to the beauty and simplicity of the original.

Stranger review
$9.79 Moody, atmospheric, and bordering on the surreal, this thriller was intended by legendary director John Huston (THE MALTESE FALCON, MOULIN ROUGE) to be an allegory for the repressive American government during the red scare. Though this point was ultimately missed by audiences of all political persuasions, the film nonetheless remains a masterpiece of the suspense genre. Jennifer Jones (TENDER IS THE NIGHT) stars as China Valdez, a Cuban woman whose brother is killed by the authorities; she vows revenge, and joins up with a group of revolutionaries planning to take down the corrupt government. She falls in love with Tony Fenner (John Garfield, GENTLEMEN'S AGREEMENT), an American expat who has also joined the people's revolution, with a plan to tunnel under a cemetery, blow up the car of an official, and then to mount a daring plot to destroy the infrastructure of the government in one fell swoop. The film moves towards its inexorable climax with Huston's characteristically deft storytelling, and both Garfield and Jones turn in excellent performances, with Jones' believable. Cuban accent especially noteworthy.

$15.59 In Fritz Lang's WOMAN IN THE WINDOW, a tense psychological melodrama, a meek college professor, Wanley (Edward G. Robinson), gets mixed up in murder and blackmail. In a discussion with some male colleagues at his club, Wanley expresses his attraction to a painting of a beautiful woman and ponders the possibility of having a love adventure later in life. A little while later, Wanley is shocked to encounter the painting's model, Alice Reed (Joan Bennet), standing right next to him on the street. She invites him to her apartment to look at a few other pieces of art, but while he's there, an angry man storms into the apartment. The man accuses Alice of cheating on him and tries to attack the professor, and Wanley kills the man in self-defense. The police soon discover the murder and Wanly begins living in fear of being caught. In time, the accidental killing gives rise to blackmail, deception, and more murder, spinning THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW into a tragic and claustrophobic meditation on fate, crime, and punishment. Dazzlingly orchestrated, the film shows Lang's masterful direction and evocative cinematography and editing.

Stranger movie DVD
$16.29 Writer-director-star Giada Colagrande makes her debut in the noirish erotic drama OPEN MY HEART (APRIMI IL CUORE). She plays Caterina, the younger sister of prostitute Maria, who has also raised her sibling since she was a two-year-old. Caterina is essentially imprisoned in the home of the pair, remaining there even when Maria brings home her clients. She is only allowed out for dance classes that Maria escorts her to and from. But when Caterina develops a relationship with a man at the dance academy, upsetting Maria's carefully balanced house and their abnormal sibling relationship, her sister becomes unhinged and possibly dangerous. Colagrande's film mixes disturbing sexual elements with traditional imagery (such as Maria's embodiment of the mother-whore dichotomy) taken from the Italian Catholic backdrop the work sets itself against.

| | Manson Family DVD (2005)
Stranger video
$14.79 This dramatization of the notorious hippies-gone-wrong saga of the Manson Family was 15 years in the works. Directed by underground cult auteur Jim Van Bebber, it is an unflinching, accurate, and original presentation of the familiar, brutal tale. Marcel Games delivers a believably seductive portrayal of the cult leader, blithely easing a group of love generation teens into a life of acid-soaked orgies, gang rape, and ultimately murder. Audiences glimpse the methods by which all outsiders were made to seem less than human, and thus murder victims on the path to spiritual salvation. Van Bebber frames the story through a documentary being put together by a trashy television journalist, so that the story unfolds through interviews with home movie footage; present-day interviews with former cult members; and dramatization to tell the story. The result is an unremitting and unforgettable horror that manages to be strangely beautiful and totally trashy at the same time. Gritty and confrontational, the complete investment and vision of the director is in evidence at all times.
