| | Linda Ronstadt Don't Cry Now CD - Import Linda Ronstadt Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
This major 1973 release finds Ronstadt still solidifying her position as rock's premier interpretive singer. The country rock of the Eagles and producer/writer John David Souther remains the idiom, but Ronstadt has the voice, style and background to deliver this commercialized roots music with little loss of authenticity. Unlike Bonnie Raitt or Janis, she is relatively free of blues or R&B influence. In another singer this might seem a liability, but it allows Rondstadt unusually direct access to the emotional wellsprings of the country and folk which defined post-sixties rock music. Whether on the Eagles' own "Desperado," the country warhorse "Silver Threads And Golden Needles" or Neil Young's "I Believe In You," Rondstadt's powerful contralto emerges as a representative voice of a musical generation just coming of age.

FAMILY TREE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package.
Equal parts retrospective, autobiography, and objet d'art, Björk's Family Tree gives fans a very special glimpse at the creative processes behind her work, collecting two decades' worth of her music and words in a unique, lavishly packaged set. A white paper sleeve embossed with work by Icelandic artist Gabriela Fridriksdottir holds a translucent, petal-pink plastic case containing five 3" discs of "Roots," "Beats," and "Strings"; a collection of Björk's favorite songs from her albums; "Words," a booklet of selected lyrics; and an essay by Björk explaining the genesis of this set, which manages to use phrases like "taxonomic structure" and "a new Icelandic modern musical language" without sounding too ambitiously academic. Scattered throughout are Fridriksdottir's paintings, sculptures, and illustrations, which mix a playful, organic sensibility with clean lines that are both futuristic and childlike. They complement Björk's work, and especially this project, perfectly, since Family Tree emphasizes her beginnings as a classically trained but rebellious young musician and her current incarnation as an artist who unites the cerebral with the emotional and the avant-garde with the accessible. Family Tree's detailed packaging is notable not only for its beauty, but because its very intricacy forces the viewer/reader/listener to slow down, savor, and contemplate the set's contents instead of consuming them immediately. This sets the mood for a very personal experience, which begins ...

| | Happy Land: Musical Tributes To Laura Ingalls Wild CD (2005)
Don't Cry Now music CDs
$10.65 In case you don't know, Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote the Little House on the Prairie books, and in their pages she referenced some 126 songs and folk tunes, hoping to give people the flavor of the times. She included folk songs, parlor songs, fiddle tunes, minstrel show songs, play party songs, Scottish and Irish songs and more in her books. She once said about her semi-autobiographical books: "There is one thing that will always remain the same to remind people of little Laura's days on the prairie, and that is Pa's fiddle." This album was first released in 2005, and was reissued in 2007 to compliment The Arkansas Traveler, the second CD in a project that intends to produce ten CDs documenting the songs Wilder included in her books. The album opens and closes with fiddle tunes by Jep Bisbee, recorded by Thomas Edison in 1923. Bisbee was around the same age as Pa Ingalls, and played in a traditional style. He contributes "The Girl I Left Behind Me" and "The Devil's Dream," one of the best known fiddle tunes of the time. The contemporary artists who contribute to the CD play in a traditional manner. Pat Enright's version of "The Girl I Left Behind Me" is the cowboy version of a song that originally came from Ireland called "Mountain Dew," and slightly more polished than Bisbee's. Riders in the Sky contribute "The Blue Juniata" a story sympathetic to the plight of the Native Americans forced to move away from their traditional lands by the white settlers claiming their land, and "Captain Jinks," a comic song full of quips that were probably hilarious back in 1868. The term "high jinks" owes its origin to this tune. Ranger Doug from Riders in the Sky takes a solo turn on the minstrel show tune "The Big Sunflower," a sentimental song about love that sounds a bit dated and "Uncle Sam's Farm" a hit for the Hutchinson Family Singers. The Hutchinson Family was a close harmony group that sang at anti-slavery, women's suffrage and Lincoln for President rallies. The song is a march, full of optimism celebrating the riches waiting people brave enough ...
