The music on altoist Dave Binney's set, which is comprised entirely of his originals (other than one free improvisation), is consistently intriguing. The post-bop solos, particularly those of Binney and tenor-saxophonist Chris Potter, are excellent but it is in the arrangements themselves, and in the way that the improvisations flow naturally out of the episodic frameworks that are most impressive. Although the overall results are logical, the frequently passionate music is quite unpredictable, with the forms evolving as much as the individual solos. Some doomsayers may claim that jazz has not evolved since the mid-1970s, but South is one of hundreds (if not thousands) of bits of evidence to the contrary. This is a set that will grow on listeners, keeping one guessing even after several listens. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at System Two Studio, Brooklyn, New York in June 2000.

JazzTimes (10/03, p.85) - "...The real stars of the show are Binney's compositional skills....He writes attractive postbop themes....Potter sneaks in some outsized moments..." | | Chris Potter Follow The Red Line: Live At The Village Vanguard CD (2007)
South CD music
$13.65 Chris Potter's Underground (Saxophone): Nate Smith (drums); Chris Potter , Craig Taborn, Adam Rogers.
Chris Potter's quartet Underground should be looked upon as one of the many facets in the saxophonist's prismatic view of contemporary jazz. Certainly the band is oriented toward a progressive jazz image with the electric guitar work of the brilliant Adam Rogers and Craig Taborn's witty and pungent Fender Rhodes keyboard. Assumedly the concept of Underground harks somewhat to the fusion of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea. But Potter's vision with this combo goes beyond those static and funkier values, entering a wilder, unabashed, and fierce aggression that ...

South music CDs
$14.69 During their eight years of existence, Uncle Bonsai released only two albums: A Lonely Grain of Corn (1984) and Boys Want Sex in the Morning (1986). Near the end of the band's existence, in December 1987, they recorded a show that they put out themselves as a 23-song double-length cassette called Myn Ynd Wymyn. It was made available only to their mailing list and a few stores. In 1992, former Uncle Bonsai member Andrew Ratshin trimmed the album down ...

| | Sir Charles Thompson I Got Rhythm: Live At The Jazz Showcase CD (2001)
South CD music
$12.89 Arguably, Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase is to Chicago what the Village Vanguard is to New York: the city's most legendary and prestigious jazz club (which isn't to take anything away from the Green Mill, the Bop Shop, and other well-respected Windy City jazz venues). The Jazz Showcase regularly attracts jazz's major names, so it isn't surprising that Delmark would record more than one Sir Charles Thompson album there. First came 2000's Robbins' Nest: Live at the Jazz Showcase, then, in 2001, Delmark recorded and released I Got Rhythm, which has the same subtitle. This swing-to-bop CD finds an 83-year-old Thompson joined by the same musicians who accompany him on Robbins' Nest; the veteran pianist forms an acoustic trio with bassist Ed de Haas and drummer Charles Braugham, and the trio becomes a quartet when saxman/clarinetist Eric Schneider is featured on seven selections. Not many surprises occur -- most of the standards that Thompson picks have been recorded countless times over the years, and his style of playing hasn't changed much since the '40s. But then, no one expects him to reinvent the wheel at 83. While I Got Rhythm is predictable, it is also pleasing. Thompson's chops have obviously held up well over the years, and he is as expressive on swinging up-tempo fare (including "Sometimes I'm Happy," the Gershwin Brothers' "I Got Rhythm," and Lester Young's "Jumpin' With Symphony Sid") as he is on lyrical, introspective performances of well-known ballads like ...
| | Lino Patruno Jammin' For Condon CD (2002)
South music CDs
$13.85 This tribute to Eddie Condon is quite logical. Like Condon, Lino Patruno is a rhythm guitarist who rarely solos but is quite talented at organizing all-star trad jazz bands. As with Condon, Patruno has the ability to gather together oversized groups and feature each of the musicians under conditions that bring out the best in each player. Patruno (who lives in Italy) outdid himself on this live concert. Eight horns, a four-piece rhythm section, and Rebecca Kilgore (who sings "Exactly Like You," "You Took Advantage of Me," and "Sugar") are heard in exciting ensembles and heated solos. All of the horns get their spots, and they occasionally pay tribute to Condon's sidemen (such as Tom Baker's emulation of Wild Bill Davison's growls on "You Took Advantage of Me" and Evan Christopher sometimes sounding a ...
