This is certainly an intriguing release. Guitarist Joel Harrison recorded a dozen songs associated with country music, some of them quite traditional, but he recast them in surprising ways, making the CD title of Free Country fit quite well. Sometimes his steel guitar pays respect to the melodies and at other times he freaks out a bit on his electric guitar. None of the vocalists are that outstanding, and an instrumental "This Land Is Your Land" receives a surprisingly downbeat rendition. Norah Jones sings "I Walk The Line" and "Tennessee Waltz" quite straight, showing that she is more comfortable in country music than in jazz, but making one wonder how she created such a big stir in 2003. However, Dave Binney's alto playing is a major asset on some of the more adventurous interpretations, and violinist Rob Thomas, pianist Uri Caine, and Tony Cedras on accordion add to the changing atmospheres of this strange but consistently colorful set. Well worth checking out for listeners with extremely open minds. ~ Scott Yanow

More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a ...

| | Complete Syl Johnson On Hi Records CDs (2000)
Free Country songs
$22.79 Syl Johnson started out his career on the blues side of things, working with Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells, Magic Sam and others, but his biggest successes have come as a soul singer, first for Peter Wright's TwiNight label (originally TwiLight Records, it became TwiNight when it was discovered that another label already owned the Twilight name) in the late 1960s, and then with Hi Records in the early- to mid-'70s. Working with the venerable producer Willie Mitchell and the unbeatable Hi rhythm section, Johnson put out four albums for the label, all of which are included here on this double-disc set, The Complete Syl Johnson on Hi Records, along with a handful of bonus tracks. Singing at the upper end of his range, Johnson sounds a bit (well, actually, a lot) like a poor man's Al Green, his labelmate at Hi, working the same smooth, sensual shuffle that Mitchell seemed to be able to pull effortlessly from the air. There's a lot to like here, including the sexy "Feelin' Frisky," the wonderfully sincere "I Want to Take You Home (To See Mama)," the hard-hitting "Stuck in Chicago," the goofy (but winning) "I Hear the Love Chimes," and Johnson's biggest hit with Hi, a version of Al Green's "Take Me to the River," which peaked at number seven on the R&B charts in 1975. The comparisons to Green are inevitable, but Johnson holds his own, sounding a bit more ragged and rough, although ...

| | Blue Skies For Black Hearts Love Is Not Enough CD (2006)
Free Country songs
$12.79 Not that the band might appreciate the thought, depending, but arguably the cover of Love Is Not Enough is one of the more emo things around -- not only is it a heart (or a cartoon drawing of same) but it features both stitch marks and pins stuck in it. Hopefully they'll never be stuck clunkily namedropped in a Zach Braff movie. All this aside, Blue Skies for Black Hearts' 2006 effort is an amiable enough effort that may not change the world but still is a sweet little way to pass the time gently. If anything it's nice to hear low-key power pop -- as such -- instead of an aggressively overthought and beaten-to-death version of the same that has long since worn ...
