This is an unusual set in which singer-guitarist Joel Harrison says that his goal is to "locate the confluence of Miles Davis and Johnny Cash." The music has country-style vocals from Harrison that alternate rather than blend in with adventurous jazz featuring saxophonist Dave Binney. The repertoire includes country pieces (from Jimmy Webb and Merle Haggard among others), some gospel numbers and a few recent originals. Although country music and jazz had fused together in the 1930s to form Western Swing, this CD has nothing in common with that in that the jazz is quite modern and the country singing is stark and emotional. Does it succeed? It will to listeners who enjoy both idioms of music and want to hear something very different than the usual. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Herb Alpert S.R.O. CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
So Long 2nd Street CD music
$9.99 By late 1966, it seemed as if every TV commercial and every pop arranger had latched onto the Herb Alpert "Ameriachi" sound -- at which point the resourceful originator of that sound began to pare it down and loosen it up a bit. S.R.O. (Standing Room Only), referring to the Tijuana Brass' string of sold-out concerts, is an accurate title, for this LP is about a seven-piece band loaded with experienced jazzers who groove and swing together to a greater degree than on their previous albums. Sure, the ...
| | Allman Brothers Band Instant Live: Alltel Pavilion At Walnut Creek - Raleigh, NC 8/10/03 CDs (2004)
So Long 2nd Street music CDs
$21.35 The final evening of their 2003 summer tour found the Allman Brothers planning a special night on the friendly turf of Raleigh, NC, wrapping up yet another road trip with invitations to Susan Tedeschi, Karl Denson, and truly serious jazzbo Branford Marsalis to join the group on-stage. It was all captured by the state-of-the-digital-arts folks at Instant Live, who burn CDs of the shows and make them available to concertgoers who still have a few extra green ones in their pockets by evening's end. On the sprawling three-CD set documenting these particular proceedings, there is indeed some fine music, although in his Allmans premiere appearance Marsalis doesn't fare as well as jam band-friendly Denson; the sax-blowing Marsalis brother (heard on "Dreams" and "Whipping Post") seems shoehorned between the guitars and strains a bit over the loud rock groove. Elsewhere, Gregg Allman is in fine voice, particularly on the slower numbers like the stellar read of "Gambler's Roll" from Seven Turns and the world-weary "Old Before My Time"; Derek Trucks is indeed a wunderkind as advertised; Oteil Burbridge is the most proficient bassist ...

| | Janet Sussman Subtle Bodies CD (2007)
So Long 2nd Street music CDs
$11.39 Janet Sussman on her new album SUBTLE BODIES:"The music on this album is improvised, but the methods that I use to produce it have taken years to develop. I have learned to “back listen” to the music as it emerges, and hear it as sequences of sound that have a particular effect on the mind and body. My breath, body, and subtle energy system “jam” like jazz musicians as I play, so that the effect on listeners is complex and layered throughout their own physicality. The music is free-flowing and follows the contours of the energy body rather than a typical compositional framework."The acoustic piano, due to its percussive nature, lends itself to punctuating the rhythmic sequences that pull stress out of the physical body. Through this kneading of the physical body, emotional knots are also released. The synthesizer, due to its digital and electrical nature, is naturally more ethereal and related to the subtle energy system. The spacious, open-ended character of the synthesizer in its many guises gives the listener the capacity to view other dimensions both from an interior and environmental point of reference. The vocalizations that I use on the album are adapted from guided meditational techniques that I work with in a therapeutic context. They represent the capacity of the subtle bodies to morph, shape-shift or stretch to occupy greater and greater amplitudes of space/time. "The combination of acoustic piano, synthesizer and voice creates a dynamic, integrative palette. This elicits a feeling of peace while delving deep into the tensions, conflicts and stored emotions of a ...
