| | Nickelback Dark Horse CD (2008)
Vredens Tid
$15.65 Nickleback's sixth album doesn't stake out new ground, but this Canadian post-grunge quartet is known for their allegiance to old-school hard rock values. That allegiance is borne out on 2008's DARK HORSE, a collection of riff-driven rockers and power ballads that thrives on simple chord progressions, distortion-heavy guitars, and lyrics about partying and other carnal delights. The singalong single "Gotta Be Somebody" may flirt with radio-ready pop, but most of DARK HORSE revels in denim-clad, bad boy swagger.
It's hard to forget that Nickleback is a mainstream act, however, ...
| | Rammstein Mutter CD (2001)
Vredens Tid
$11.99 Where Germany's Rammstein explored a sinister, electronic-oriented sound in their previous work, MUTTER finds the doyens of doom turning more "organic," if no less ominous. In place of techno beats and synthesizers, this album offers crunching electric guitars and pounding drums, offset by operatic backing vocals and orchestral washes. The whole affair is awash with an almost Wagnerian sense of grandeur and an undeniable darkness.
The unsettling aspects of MUTTER are underscored by Rammstein's vocals, which highlight the most guttural aspects of the German language, and the gloomy industrial-rock feel that pervades the album. ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
Vredens Tid
$17.65 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of ...
| | Judas Priest Concert Classics CD (2009) Reissue
Vredens Tid
$11.18 There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest "Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal. The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and moved metal to a new level. Looking back on the body of the work ...
| | Clutch Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes And Undeniable Truths CD (1993)
Vredens Tid
$7.65 On the surface, it may sound as if Clutch is mining the same vein as contemporary metal artists like Korn and Corrosion of Conformity, but with a solid set of grooves to keep their humorous material from becoming too hokey, they set themselves above most of their peers through dogged hard rocking and consistent songwriting prowess. Highlights on Transnational Speedway League include the entire first side, most notably "A Shogun Named Marcus" and "Binge and ...
| | Bobby Watson Live & Learn CD (2002)
Vredens Tid
$10.49 Live & Learn, Bobby Watson's Palmetto debut, is an engaging quintet disc featuring Orrin Evans on piano, Greg Skaff on guitar, old friend Curtis Lundy on bass, and up and comer Montez Coleman on drums. It's a high-spirited record, melding hard bop ("River Jordan," Pamela Watson's "Stanky P," Dawn Warren's "Why Not") with more soul-tinged sounds ("We Fall Down," "Live & Learn"). Skaff's guitar gives the session much of that contemporary bite. The instrument isn't terribly common in mainstream ...

| | Tord Gustavsen Changing Places CD (2003)
Vredens Tid
$14.59 This release signals in the then 33-year old, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen's debut outing for the ECM Records label. His fellow compatriots, bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad, round out this jazz piano trio offering. Fundamentally speaking, the group seemingly works its palate into that classic "ECM Records" aesthetic, comprising echo-laden sonic characteristics and a chamber-esque vibe. Otherwise, Gustavsen demonstrates meticulously construed faculties via a tasteful approach, ringing up notions of the late Bill Evans, amid a conservatory-type demeanor. To that end, the pianist shines forth as a gifted melody ...
| | This Is 80'S Hair Metal CDs (2003)
Vredens Tid
$15.75 An odd three-disc set from Deadline, This Is '80s Hair Metal isn't nearly as definitive as its title implies. Subtitled "Studio Fuelled," the first disc in the set features what must be re-recordings -- Quiet Riot's "Cum on Feel the Noize," Warrant's "Cherry Pie," the Bulletboys' "Smooth Up," and Pretty Boy Floyd's "Leather Boyz With Electric Toyz" are featured; honestly, some die-hard fans might prefer these mostly beefy and energetic newer versions over the originals, since the production values on some of the originals haven't aged well. The second disc, subtitled "Live and Dangerous," is all live, including performances from the likes of Cinderella, Lita Ford, Dangerous Toys, L.A. Guns, Great White, and Saigon Kick; they're of no known origin, and the sound quality is all over the place, while the venues seem to range from packed auditoriums to grubby sheds. The third disc is a mixed bag of ballads, most of which are also re-recordings of the originals; a good chunk of the content on this disc is live as well. ...
