$14.59 This release signals in the then 33-year old, Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen's debut outing for the ECM Records label. His fellow compatriots, bassist Harald Johnsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad, round out this jazz piano trio offering. Fundamentally speaking, the group seemingly works its palate into that classic "ECM Records" aesthetic, comprising echo-laden ...

More than most jazz lite artists, Peter White flaunts a restless improvisational sense, which is fully evident on Glow. Aside from a few incidental fills tossed into the breeze by this or that horn player, this is entirely White's show. His performance on all these tracks, typically over a backdrop of gauzy major-seventh string pads, provides a lesson in long-form jamming against a steady, sensuous backbeat, with octave passages and a buoyant rhythm feel that echo Wes Montgomery. Despite these similarities, White displays a distinctive sound, with blues and Spanish influences perfuming his romantic phrases. The original material is unmemorable, and even such familiar titles as "Just My Imagination" and "Who's That Lady" stretch into one- or two-chord vamps that serve as broad ...

| | Chet Baker But Not For Me CD (1994)
Driving Music On Aloha Street album
$12.89 BUT NOT FOR ME includes six previously unreleased performances from 1982.
This 1994 CD, released some six years following the death of Chet Baker, is a major addition to his discography. The trumpeter, who seemed to go into the studio almost obsessively during the last dozen years of his life, is heard in what seems to be a well thought out session with an impressive cast. The rhythm section of Kenny Barron, Charlie Haden, and Ben Riley ranks as one of the best that ever accompanied Baker, resulting in some very inspired playing all around. Flautist James Newton is added for the gorgeous "Lament" (a reworking of the old spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" and not the J. J. Johnson composition of the same name). The imaginative take of Miles Davis' "Four" begins with just Haden accompanying Baker's vocal, before tuba player Howard Johnson takes Baker's place, with the leader eventually adding his trumpet to what finally becomes a trio. Johnson's tuba also makes an interesting substitute for Gerry Mulligan's baritone sax in the original recording of "Line for Lyons," though it's impossible for him to achieve the lyricism of its composer in his famous recording; Barron also sits out this number. Baker takes to Haden's moody "Ellen David" like it was a part of his regular repertoire. A snappy arrangement of Gershwin's "But Not for Me" is followed by the intriguing "Prayer for the Newborn," a fairly modern ballad penned by Dennis Luxion. It's a shame that Barron and Haden didn't have more opportunities to record with Chet Baker, as the results within this release show a considerable chemistry between them. Out of print since the demise of Stash in the mid-1990s, this ...

$16.05 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Jazz fusion bass freaks and fans of the late great Weather Report innovator first got the message that his richly textured compositions were ripe for spirited big-band arrangements on 2003's critically acclaimed Word of Mouth, whose all-star band was led by Peter Graves (whose orchestra Pastorius launched his career with) and included sharp melodic and rhythmic contributions by bassmen who have proudly carried on the tradition -- Victor Wooten, Gerald Veasley, Richard Bona, Victor Bailey, Marcus Miller, and Jimmy Haslip. On the funky, energetic, yet frequently poignant follow-up -- which reminds listeners even more of the bass legend's genius for composition -- these monsters return, complemented by band newcomers like Israel "Cachao" Lopez, Jr., Mark Egan, Oteil Burbridge, and Will Lee. What's exciting is that even though the set is joyfully plastered with grand solos by these rhythm masters as well as Randy Brecker, Hiram Bullock, Ed Calle, Bob Mintzer, Arturo Sandoval, Peter Erskine, and Mike Stern, everyone's truly dedicated to making this a buoyant team effort. So while Mintzer and Brecker blaze amidst the madness on "Dania," there's an ...
