Naghm Fi Hayati / Enta Habibi album
$10.45 A classic release from one of Jamaica's greats, NIGHT NURSE shows the Cool Ruler at his best--performing melodic, chilled reggae such as the title track and "Hot Stepper." The title track was a hit for Simply Red when they covered it in 1997. Although at his most prolific in the mid '80s, when he was beset by financial problems, Isaacs managed to maintain the quality of his material as this album proves. The Roots Radics provide excellent backing for Isaacs' smooth vocals. Perhaps a bit too mellow for fans of more militant reggae such as that purveyed by the Revolutionaries, time has nevertheless proved this to be a classic reggae album--the epitome of the feel-good Jamaican sound.
Although his 1981 album, ...

$13.09 Vocalist Azam Ali and multi-instrumentalist Loga Ramin Torkian (known for their work with the group Axiom of Choice) and remix producer Carmen Rizzo are the brains behind this visionary world music ensemble. With the assistance of other studio musicians, this self-titled release fuses ancient Middle Eastern musical styles--most notably Persian--with cutting edge electronic sounds.
For example, "In the Shadow of Life" mixes an Iranian melody with droning synthesizers. ...

| | Fort Pastor Beautiful Imperfection CD (2007)
Naghm Fi Hayati / Enta Habibi CD music
$13.09 Those who are heavily into 2000s horror movies will have no problem figuring out where Fort Pastor got their name: in Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of George A. Romero's 1978 zombie film Dawn of the Dead, Fort Pastor was a military fort where people sought refuge from zombies on the rampage. When bands get their names from horror flicks, one could easily assume that they are offering some type of over-the-top death metal/grindcore along the lines of Cannibal Corpse or Carcass. But Beautiful Imperfection doesn't sound anything like that. Actually, this Florida-based outfit favors a very melodic and tuneful adult alternative approach that draws on direct or indirect influences ranging from Blues Traveler, the Dave Matthews Band, the Gin Blossoms, and the Goo Goo Dolls to U2 (although Fort Pastor doesn't rock as hard) and Peter Gabriel. Fort Pastor's name is using the zombies concept as a metaphor for materialistic people who are spiritually dead -- and besides, would Cannibal Corpse or Carcass have an artsy album title like Beautiful Imperfection? Probably not. This 2007 release frequently has a world music edge, incorporating traces of everything from African pop to Celtic folk ...
| | Science Faxtion Living On Another Frequency CD (2008) (Import) Belgium
Naghm Fi Hayati / Enta Habibi music CDs
$13.69 In the early to mid-'90s, Bootsy Collins, Buckethead, and Brian "Brain" Mantia certainly did some trailblazing in the high-tech funk-metal field, as members of the on again/off again outfit, Praxis. By 2008, the trio was at it again, but with a few new faces added to the proceedings (including singer/guitarist Greg Hampton and DJ Botieus), and a new name, Science Faxtion. The group's debut full-length, Living on Another Frequency, is a much more focused offering (especially when it comes to songwriting) than anything Praxis put out -- probably due to Hampton's input. Up to this point, Hampton was best known as a producer (having worked on quite a few classic rock-based recordings, including Alice Cooper's Along Came a Spider and Tommy Bolin's Whips and Roses), but on Living on Another Frequency, you'll discover that Hampton has a pretty darn swell singing voice as well, and impressively has no problem weaving guitar lines with the whackoid Buckethead (not many guitarists can make that claim, for sure!). As evidenced by "Lookin' for Eden," "Chaos in Motion," and "Fatally Flawed Flesh," Science Faxtion can rock ferociously. But just when you think you have the group figured out -- as a band ...
