| | Bebo & Cigala Lagrimas Negras CD (2004)
Tahet Amrak CD music
$8.99 Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld together cooking son, jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and flamenco rhythms, in tunes by composers such as Lolita de la Colina, Virgilio and Homero Expósito, Ramón Perelló, the grand team of Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, Caetano Veloso (who makes a guest appearance), Maria Teresa Vera, Miguel Matamoros (who composed the title track), and others. Most are Cuban ballads. Guests such as Veloso, Paquito D'Rivera, Pancho Terry, Tata Güines, and El Niño Josele fall by on different tracks. And while the tunes are top-shelf ...

| | Jay Collins Reality Tonic CD (1996)
Tahet Amrak music CDs
$14.29 second release from saxophonist w. Ku-Umba Frank Lacey-trmb/flug, James Hurt-pno, Santi Debriano-bss & Michael Mazor-drms
Upon seeing that Reality Tonic opens with Charlie Parker's "Au Privave," one might assume that tenor saxophonist Jay Collins is strictly a hard bopper. But Collins isn't the type of artist who gives listeners all bop all the time; this 1995 date has one foot in '40s/'50s hard bop and the other in '60s post-bop. Reality Tonic has one foot in the world of Bird, Sonny Stitt, Wardell Gray, Dexter Gordon, and "I Got Rhythm" changes, and the other in the world of John Coltrane, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk -- a world of post-bop and modal jazz that has a spiritual outlook and a healthy appreciation of Middle Eastern, African, and Asian music. And Collins wears both hats well, although his post-bop material tends to be more risk-taking. Collins is hell-bent for hard bop on an ultra-fast, highly conventional performance ...

$18.99 "Sweet Sunny Day" represents Northern Light's first CD released in the early 90's. The group explores the use of lush vocals and instrumental backings on which they go to expand in their next project, "49th Parallel". Like "49th Parallel", "Sweet Sunny Day" has met with acclaim and high praise from such places as Brian Wilsons's official website, www.brianwilson.com, to www.beachboys.com as well as many ...
| | S T Mikael Mind Of Fire CD (2008) (Import) Sweden
Tahet Amrak album
$17.35 S.T. Mikael's reputation among Swedish bands with a bent for the psychedelic can be seen in the fact that Mind of Fire -- his first new album in a decade -- features various players from Dungen on it, among other acts. It's a nice tip of the hat from various self-proclaimed spiritual children, no question, but Mind of Fire is a bit uneven, on when it's on, pleasantly there otherwise. Those high points, though, are killer -- a good example being "Wizdom," which eschews slabs of drone or a spaced-out feeling for a full-throttled embrace of funk instead, with results that are familiar enough but which contrast against the rest of the album, and Mikael's own reputation, very nicely. In contrast is something like "Gyrax," a bit of a rambling stoner fest that coasts on atmospheres but barely lasts in the memory like it could. Elsewhere, there are simple but sharp takes on acid folk via tight grooves, ...
