$13.89 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement ...
| | Laura Pausini Io Canto CD (2006)
Farid El Atrach-Ala Bal music CDs
$7.55 Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her follow-up effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the Americas). Yo Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic. Pausini performs the songs in ...

Farid El Atrach-Ala Bal music CDs
$7.59 "Shape Of My Heart" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
The title of this album by the mega-platinum boy band might conceivably refer to the emotional state conveyed in some of the songs. While there are the requisite pledges of undying love ("Shining Star," "I Promise You"), several of the tunes on BLACK & BLUE deal with romantic turbulence, such as the opening track "The Call" and the vengeful "Get Another Boyfriend." While some of the songs are unsurprisingly provided by teen pop maestro Max Martin, several selections here were written by the Backstreet Boys themselves, proving conclusively that they have more creative input into their music than their naysayers might suggest. The production on BLACK & BLUE is a mix of pop, R&B, and mainstream hip-hop elements; the building ...

| | Francesco De Gregori Mira Mare 19.4.89 CD (1989) (Import)
Farid El Atrach-Ala Bal songs
$15.75 Francesco De Gregori went through a spell in the '80s when he failed to deliver the sort of absolute classics that populated his '70s records. This is not to say, however, that he was making weak albums. Mira Mare 19.4.89 is the best example of both these two seemingly opposite statements. While several of these songs became concert favorites, none remotely achieved the popularity of De Gregori's best-known songs. Yet, this is arguably his strongest album of the decade, after the masterpiece Titanic. Compared to the patchwork feel of his last two albums, Scacchi e Tarocchi and Terra di Nessuno, Mira Mare 19.4.89 makes for a more cohesive, compelling statement, both in its sound and in its thematic. Its peaks may not soar as high as " "La Storia" or "I Matti," but these nine tracks unfold with no discernible dips in quality or tone. The album is dominated by a sense of rightful anger at the current state of affairs, as De Gregori takes a deep ...

$9.95 | | Steve Mann Live At The Ash Grove CD (2008)
Farid El Atrach-Ala Bal album
$18.99 Steve Mann’s most beloved album is now available on CD. Recorded in 1967 direct from the sound system onto a small tape recorder on a table at the Ash Grove music club, this live performance album has been selling for increasingly higher prices each year as it gets rarer and harder to find. Frustrated aficionados unable to keep up with the now extinct item, rarely found on Ebay, can at last claim the performance for their own on CD, better than ever, and with extra information in the liner notes. The original producer, Rick Smith, working with engineer John Lyon found and sampled a safety copy of the recording master, which was then remastered at Bay Records in Berkeley. Rick himself contributes an anecdotal reminiscence of his experiences with Steve Mann in the 60s in Los Angeles that is truly a window into the life and times of this gentle and talented artist. Steve ...
