| | Pink Martini Sympathique CD (1997)
Yijilak Yom music CDs
$13.89 The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike contemporaries such as Combustible Edison, Pink Martini had the musical chops and heartfelt love of the style to keep the album from descending into snarky kitsch. In 2009, Heinz Records released the first ever vinyl edition of the album.
Recorded at Stiles Recording Studio, Portland, Oregon, from December 1996 to April 1997.
Pink Martini: China Forbes, Thomas Lauderdale.
Personnel: China Forbes (vocals); Dan Faehnle (guitar); Aaron Meyer (violin); David Eby (cello); Gavin Bondy (trumpet); Robert Taylor (trombone); Thomas Lauderdale (piano); Doug Smith (vibraphone, percussion); Richard Rothfus (drums, bongos, percussion); Brian Davis ...
| | Masters Of Acoustic Guitar CD (1997)
Yijilak Yom songs
$11.99 Masters of Acoustic Guitar is a fine collection of exceptional acoustic guitarists who favor the luxurious textures of contemporary instrumental and new age music. While this music will be a little bland for some tastes, there's a lot of subtlety and variety within this music, from the folk stylings of Leo Kottke to the jazzier Billy McLaughlin and Dirk Freymuth. Other featured guitarists include Ed Gerhard, Stephen Bennett, Eric Johnson, Oscar Lopez, Peter Roller, ...

| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Yijilak Yom CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own band, now well bedded-in, is superb and sympathetic, but there are some surprising additions (Paraguayan harp, anyone?). Natacha Atlas weighs in for a duet on the title cut, which becomes a gentle contest between the two singers, both of whom work out of their skins ...
| | Najee Plays Songs From The Key Of Life: A Tribute To Stevie Wonder CD (1995)
Yijilak Yom music CDs
$11.69 On PLAYS SONGS FROM THE KEY OF LIFE, Najee covers every song from Stevie Wonder's 1976 album SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE, in the same order as the original album.
Throughout his career, saxophonist Najee has generally performed crossover music that mixes R&B, jazz, and pop. This particular date is one of his strongest and most jazz-oriented, a well-conceived tribute to Stevie Wonder. Najee (heard on soprano, flute, alto, and tenor) plays instrumental versions of the music from Wonder's famous Songs From the Key of Life album, plus several other notable Wonder songs. Assisted by such players as keyboardists George Duke, Ronnie Foster, and Herbie Hancock; guitarist Phil Upchurch; and a top-notch horn section, Najee creates fresh renditions of 21 Stevie Wonder tunes. Highlights include "Love's in Need of Love Today," "Sir Duke," "Knocks Me off My Feet," "If It's Magic," and a medley of "All Day Sucker" and "Easy Goin' Evening." Throughout the memorable set, Najee shows that he can be a strong jazz improviser while still remaining accessible. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
All songs written or co-written by Stevie Wonder.
Recorded at O'Henry Studios, Burbank, California; LeGonks Studio, Los Angeles, California; Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California in 1995. Includes liner notes by Najee.
