| | David Murray Sacred Ground CD - Import David Murray Discography of CDs
In the 1970s, tenor saxophonist David Murray established himself as one of jazz's edgiest, most forward-looking musicians and composers, and time has not diminished his fervor. While Murray's big-toned approach has become a tad smoother, he still breathes fire and talks in tongues. Yet unlike some avant-garde players, he also has a blues-charged gregariousness. SACRED GROUND features Murray's regular working group with special guest Cassandra Wilson, whose sultry, smoky, slightly husky vocals grace two songs. Pianist Lafayette Gilchrist, earthy and luminously lyrical, makes an ideal replacement for the late John Hicks, and drummer Andrew Cyrille (long-time drummer for Cecil Taylor) here epitomizes taste and crisp swing.
David Murray: David Murray (bass clarinet); Lafayette Gilchrist (piano); Ray Drummond (bass guitar); Andrew Cyrille (drums).
Additional personnel: Cassandra Wilson (vocals).Entertainment Weekly (p.69) - "Murray's alternating currents -- reflection and rage -- plug into powerful context." -- Grade: A- JazzTimes (p.74) - "[T]his is a spirt-infused outing....The stylistic range spans from ethereal meditation through jaunty, Spanish-tinged swing to freedom-bound ecstasy." Vibe (p.133) - "'Transitions' rides a breezy West Indian groove, and 'Family Reunion' dips into upright jazz-funk..." David Murray Sacred Ground Songs Sacred Ground Review

Sacred Ground album
$13.29 Although at first glance a full-length tenor-sax/drums duet set might lack variety, this matchup between David Murray and Kahil El'Zabar is on another level. For one thing, El'Zabar plays percussion as much as drums. In addition, neither musician is afraid to use space and silence, and there is no need to play at top volume and intensity all of the time. They are able to form coherent statements without the need for a full rhythm section, and they communicate together very well. The opener "Groove Allure" is relatively peaceful and lyrical while "We Is" is more violent and passionate. "Blues Affirmation" is particularly intriguing, with Murray preaching soulfully ...
| | Don Byron Ivey-Divey CD (2004)
Sacred Ground CD music
$11.89 For this luminous 2004 trio date, clarinetist/leader Don Byron collaborates with Jason Moran and Jack DeJohnette, two of the finest musicians in jazz. A firebrand with a kaleidoscope of styles, Moran emerged in the 1990s as one of the most innovative pianists of his generation, while DeJohnette's muscular, distinctive drumming has long placed him among the most influential drummers of post-'50s jazz. That Byron chose these players to complement his own multi-faceted explorations (which are influenced by traditional jazz, klezmer, chamber music, funk, and hip-hop) is enough to make one giddy even before the disc plays.
IVEY-DIVEY lives up to its promise. Motifs from swing and big-band music thread through the album, but the trio use these only as a jumping-off point. Veering from melodic, straight-ahead bop to cacophonous journeys outside ...

| | Dave Holland Critical Mass CD (2006)
Sacred Ground album
$14.19 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited to saxist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist/marimbaist Steve Nelson, or drummer Nate Smith. Each player is provided with ample moments in which to take charge, and not fleeting, gratuitous moments but rather significant chunks of solo/lead space. Holland's belief in sharing extends to the area of composition as well. Each bandmember contributes one piece to the album (Holland does claim the other four, however) and, more often than not, uses that opportunity to shapeshift, to push the band -- and make no mistake, this is a band, not a random collection of studio players -- into unexplored territory. That's not to say that Holland takes a back seat -- his presence is always strongly felt -- only that he recognizes that the bass is, first and foremost, a support instrument ...

| | Bumble Bee Slim Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 3: (1934-1935) CD (1994) Import
Sacred Ground songs
$14.05 The opening six songs on this volume, which covers the period from November 1934 until April 1935, are decidedly different in texture from much of the material that preceded them in Slim's output. With no more than a guitar or two and perhaps a mandolin backing him up, his music leans less toward the kind of urban R&B sound that his early Vocalion tracks did. The playing is superb, with Carl Martin and Ted Bogan showing off a special virtuosity, while Slim's vocals are brilliantly expressive. The ...
