As correctly stated in the liner notes by Neil Tesser, Tom Harrell's music takes several listens to fully appreciate, for there is much to discover. For Light On, his first recording as a leader in four years, Harrell contributed all of the compositions. His pieces utilize original chord changes (none are mere run-throughs of rhythm changes), complex but often somewhat catchy melodies, dynamics and subtle surprises. Only the augmented blues "Bleu Caribe," a change of pace, would work at a jam session. Harrell's cool-toned trumpet and flugelhorn contrast well with Wayne Escoffery's muscular tenor; the rhythm section is heated and stimulating; and Danny Grissett is equally effective on both the acoustic piano and the Fender Rhodes. All of the musicians are in top form, which is fortunate since these pieces are not that simple to play. Several of the originals deserve to be adopted and interpreted by other musicians. Overall, Light On is a superior set of modern jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Tom Harrell (flugelhorn); Wayne Escoffery (tenor saxophone); Danny Grissett (Fender Rhodes piano); Ugonna Okegwo (bass guitar); Johnathan Blake (drums).
Down Beat (p.75) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] well-paced, no-frills recital of nine new compositions....Harrell imparts to each one a memorable, elemental melody, meaty harmonic changes and an array of rhythmic signatures from swing to clavecentric." JazzTimes (p.71) - "Harrell's compositions are open -- all the tunes here are his -- and the playing, especially his on both trumpet and flugelhorn, is immaculate..." $14.19 One word that comes to mind when listening to Critical Mass is generosity. Double-bassist Dave Holland, four decades into his career, could certainly be forgiven for taking the word "leader" at its literal meaning, calling all the shots and keeping his musicians at bay. But that's not what he's about, and at any given time Critical Mass could just as easily have been credited ...

$29.09 Recorded live at the Umbria Jazz Winter Festival, Museo Emilio Greco, Orvieto, Italy on December 3, 1998.
Recorded live at NDR Radio Studios, Hamburg, Germany on October 29, 1998.
Recorded live at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Montreaux, Switzerland on July 10, 1996.
For those unfamiliar with accordionist Richard Galliano, this set is a rare kind of introduction to the man who, inspired by the late Astor Piazzolla, redeemed the accordion as an instrument for improvisation. This three-CD collection will delight fans, all of whom have favorite settings in which to hear Galliano play. There are three of them here: solo, duo, and trio. The solo set is perhaps the most revelatory: one complete concert in Orvieto, Italy, at the foot of the mountains on New Year's Eve, 1998. Here is where Galliano's particular genius and discipline reveal their magic. This is how his New Musette form of music was developed -- playing to himself in a mirror. The swinging harmonic phrases and melodic lines, at sometimes dizzying tempos, are entrancing as he stops and starts on a dime, gliding effortlessly from a jazz style to a form of Italian, Andalusian, and Turkish folk songs to French cabaret music to African balakos and back again. This is music made spontaneously, on the spot and in the mind, in the same manner Bill Evans made music, from the most intimate part of the heart without letting the thought process cloud the emotional or musical ...

| | Meredith Blis Purple Kind Of Blue CD (2004)
Light On CD music
$17.09 Tori Amos, Paula Cole, Fiona Apple and Sarah McLachlan reinvigorated the piano in the '90s pop/rock world, transforming it from a mere accompaniment tool to its own dynamic voice that could pounce and wail, sigh and strut. Now, in the new millennium, Meredith Blis is drawing comparisons to these stars as she blazes her own path in the tradition of such confessional singer/songwriters. Her first full-length album, "A Purple Kind of Blue" (winner of the 2006 New Mexico Music Industry Award for Best Pop CD, as well as a Best Vocal Performance nominee) spotlights a musician who lines her elegant melodies with quirky edges. Whether she's throwing in a Jimi Hendrix-style intro for her ruminative track "Legacy" or drawing inspiration from bathroom graffiti for "Untitled Love Song," Meredith's melodic-piano-driven-pop-meets-blues is a refreshing change of pace. "I don't always write a song in terms of what's going on in the moment, but for them to be real they have to come from a real place inside of you," the New York-based artist says of her music. "I don't think I put myself out in people's faces. That's really scary and that's really brave, and that's one of the things I really admire about Tori Amos. There's a subtlety to my style, and I'm sneaky in that I use metaphors, which I think lets people interpret things through their own experience." Meredith's instruments are a nimble, jazz-tinged piano and a voice that leaps from a smooth croon to a powerful siren. Like her song "Such a Lovely Girl" proclaims, "A lot a bit of tough . . . Full of heat/But pretty damn sweet" are strong aspects of her material. So are "half a cup a sugar, a quarter cup of salt, a quarter cup of raindrops [that] makes one huge cup of heart," to quote her new tune "Subterranean Lovesick Daughter." Music has been integral to Meredith's life since day one. Her father, Milton ...
