Anyone with even a passing interest in classic fusion and progressive jazz will want to own TRIO OF DOOM. Comprising three giants of the genre--guitarist John McLaughlin, drummer Tony Williams, and bassist Jaco Pastorius--Trio of Doom recorded both a studio session and a live set in 1979, and this 10-track disc contains selections from each, including Pastorius's "Continuum," McLaughlin's "Dark Prince," and Williams's "Drum Improvisation." Needless to say the playing is superb, and the energy--complex, knotted, and consistently pushing toward astral heights--is dazzling.
Personnel: Jaco Pastorius (bass guitar); Tony Williams (drums); John McLaughlin (guitar).
Down Beat (p.74) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he material is a reminder that these guys never let up, whether behind studio walls or in front of adoring audiences. For fusion buffs, TRIO OF DOOM is essential." Trio Of Doom Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A Treat From Long Ago As a fan of all 3 of these musicians from back in the '70s (and McLaughlin to this day), I'm certainly glad that JM gave these tapes another listen and decided they were worth using modern tech. for a restoration project (and the resulting sound is excellent). The muscianship of all 3 men is amazing and their interaction a treat for any fan's ear. This one is to be recommended! I do wonder if any of those old jams with Jimi might be worth a restoration treatment... Submitted by willdobbins (Rosedale, MD) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Lost Treasure Mclaughlin,Pastorius,Williams. What a trio, what a lost treasure that was found from a concert of long ago! The blend, energy of these legendary artists, two of which are deceased, makes you wonder why it took so long to release the tapes???? It takes you to a time when fusion, jazz rock, spiritual energy and vibes were kicking.True afficionados will be grateful for some new directions painted by these masters.Enjoy! Delivers the goods I was pleasantly entertained by how this CD blended very tight arrangements with improvisation. It seemed to be mainly high energy (which I like). The mellow sections did not overstay their welcome either!
The sound was surprisingly in-your-face without loosing the live ambiance.
Great release. I can't think of anything wrong with it, so I give it 5 stars. Submitted by wildtripproductions (Venice Beach CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
I Wish I'd Purchased Something Else I think the world of these players and have been listening to them for ages. But I found this recording, of a live performance coupled with studio versions of the same tunes, unrewarding. There are some nice moments of course. Just not enough of them for me. I wish I'd purchased a Weather Report recording, or a Mahavishnu recording or something else. Submitted by davidengel58 (Bethesda, MD) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Dark Prince Top five live jazz recordings of ALL TIME.
Live recording in Cuba, Dark Prince:
Williams, Pastorious pushing Mclaughlin like never before in the hardest driving post bop trio performance ever. Charlie Parker would've been smiling and tearing up listiening to this, and would've joined in like a lightening bolt.
a true treasure. Submitted by davidparrish74 (hawaii) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Trio Of Doom album
$87.89 Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL.
There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often repeated across the set lists, no two ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Trio Of Doom music CDs
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats ...

| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Trio Of Doom CD music
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. The previous two releases called in Trower's old Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid and Bruce collaborator Peter Brown to write the words, but Bruce and Trower pen these 11 songs without outside assistance. Most tunes ...
