August Burns Red: J. B. Brubaker (guitar); Dustin Davidson (bass instrument); Matt Greiner (drums); Jake Luhrs, Brent Rambler. Personnel: Jake Luhrs (vocals); Brent Rambler (guitar). Audio Mixer: Tue Madsen. Recording information: Rebel Waltz Recording Co; SOund Kitchen, Franklin, TN. With 2007's MESSENGERS, the Pennsylvania-based Christian metalcore quintet August Burns Red offers up another set of fierce, foreboding songs that belies its notably casual, Old Navy-inspired look. Led by growling frontman Jake Luhrs, the group unleashes breakneck rhythmic shifts and searing six-string riffs, as best exemplified by the blistering "Back Burner" and the restless "Truth of a Liar." The art direction of August Burns Red's third album strongly suggests a vintage early-'70s metal album by some little-remembered band -- probably British -- working in the Black Sabbath tradition. First track "The Truth of a Liar" opens with a vintage-metal scream and Tony Iommi-style riff, maintaining the connection to the past, but from that moment onwards, Messengers stays largely connected to the present day. The vocals aren't quite the usual Cookie Monster cliché, but they're definitely in the contemporary death metal style, and the unison riffage and hyper tempos are equally of the moment. Still, elements of vintage '70s metal do thread through these 11 songs, rather like a less snarky version of the Eagles of Death Metal or any of the Kyuss-inspired stoner metal bands without the bongwater buzz. In a metal scene where few of the subgenres intermingle like this, Messengers is a welcome change. ~ Stewart Mason August Burns Red Messengers Songs Messengers Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One fierce competitor If this album is enough to pound, metalcore has reached its zenith as long as the right producer fits the bill. Tue Madsen puts in "one fierce competitor" on his list on who he's been producing for more over a decade. The only other album that has Tue Madsen's name on another album he has produced, go back to "Hail Horror" by Himsa, in 2006. Otherwise, rock out with ABR has to offer with Messengers and beyond! | | As I Lay Dying An Ocean Between Us CD (2007)
Messengers
$10.75 As I Lay Dying: Duane Reed, Chad Ackerman, Nick Hip, Tommy Garcia (background vocals). Faith-inspired heavy music has come a long way from the likes of glammy '80s pop metallists Stryper. San Diego's As I Lay Dying are steadfast in their beliefs, but make no effort to force the message lyrically. For the Christian hardcore metal outfit's fourth full-length (and third for Metal Blade), Tim Lambesis and company focus intently on further developing their writing chops--employing muscular riffing, super-technical drumming, and well-placed death/clean vocal stylings. For a contemporary and well-suited production ear, AILD recruited close friend Adam Dutkiewicz (of Killswitch Engage). All these elements make for a much broader appeal on AN OCEAN BETWEEN US. As I Lay Dying offer album number four with new bassist Josh Gilbert, who replaces Clint Norris (who left to get married and settle down). An Ocean Between Us offers several new aspects in the band's sound: the churning hardcore ...
| | Wannadies Be A Girl CD (1995) (Import) United Kingdom
Messengers
$12.45 This is the album that rocketed the Wannadies to stardom internationally. Thanks to start-stop dynamics of the romantic power-pop single "You and Me Song," the band managed to find success on both sides of the Atlantic; in the U.K. the song hit the charts at the height of the Brit-pop movement and in the U.S. (where this album was never released) the song was featured in a prominent scene of the movie Romeo and Juliet. The magic of this album doesn't stop there, though. In fact, "Be a Girl" is a tour de force that lasts throughout the album's entire 11 tracks. Beside "You and Me Song," there's "Might Be Stars," another huge U.K. hit that is, without a doubt, one of the best songs ever written about being a rock star. Other highlights include the pure-pop mania of "Love in June" and "New World Record," a punchy, loud, arena-ready stomper. The guitars are ...
| | Homer Erotic Homerica The Beautiful CD (1999)
Messengers
$16.49 Homer Erotic is a band that's so original, thye almost need their own section at the music store. All female, all poetic, all the basic musical food groups, yet so tight and fluid you'd think the world of music was made just for them. You think you're hearing jazz, then all of a sudden rock guitar licks jangle through, then the R&B beat goes African, then a violin slices through so bluesy, so beyond, so primal, so sweet and seamless, the corner of your brain that hasn't been hijacked says, how did they do that? And the words, well, they take you on a trip across seven layers of conciousness, like a dream you wish hadn't ended, a dream that left you with an inkling of what really happened.Words ...
