(4 Customer Reviews)
On 2007's RIVAL FACTIONS, the long-running Christian alt-rock ensemble Project 86 unveils a collection of songs that nod to New Wave and post-punk styles, sounds that rarely make their way into the CCM world. Although some tunes find the Orange County, California-based band seemingly intent on becoming the CCM counterpart to the Bravery--most notably the synth-laden "Molotov"--other tracks, such as the urgent "Evil (A Chorus of Resistance)," display the group's trusted metal roots, making FACTIONS an album that should appeal to old fans while also garnering new admirers.

Alternative Press (p.180) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "In the throbbing 'Pull Me Closer, Violent Dancer,' drummer Alex Albert bashes out classic-rock big beats..." Project 86 Rival Factions Songs Rival Factions Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) This will get you thumping guaranteed! The buzz lines and running time (35:00) seem to matter to me the most is which lies the foundation. If it wasn't for strong word-of-mouth effort to get me interested into what they actually sound like, they effortlessly take another stepping stone in their 11-year career milestone. Reminds me of 12 Stones in comparison. The foundation draws back to their earlier albums, i.e. DBL + TH.
Could've gone the mainstream route, but I wouldn't go too far on that issue. Project 86 don't follow trends as I hear on Rival Factions than the rest of their record collection. Must be a strong political overtone. The strongest tracks (I pick) seem to lie between 2 and 3. I love how on track 2 starts with the piano line then kicks into ultra-fuzz guitars in high gear. This is some feat to build on a concept, not overusing some certain genre that digs a hole into the ground. Rival Factions prove to be at the top of the Christian music heap. Some album, eh? Sweet, but too Short This was great! The only problem is that as soon as I was really getting into the album... it ended. At only 39 minutes long, it's a huge disappointment... otherwise an outstanding album musically and lyrically. Submitted by Shaun (Cape Town, ZA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another great CD This cd offered a few new things that project 86 never really offered before. I reallt enjoyed the newly added synth parts and the technical guitar parts. A must have for any fan. Submitted by withwingswerise321 (Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One word......Disappointment I have been a Project 86 fan dating back to probably when I was 14-15 years old, and I loved their songs. I loved the heaviness and I loved the emotion and energy that was brought to the forefront on each record. So I anxiously went and bought RIVAL FACTIONS and I was THOROUGHLY disappointed. All of the music sounds like some kind of weird version of Nine Inch Nails or something (and I HATE NIN). The aggressive heavy guitar is all but gone and replaced by a much more clean sounding guitar that just doesn't fit the fast beat of most of the songs. The only positive thing is Andrew's vocal performace and it is definitley better than any other P86 album. Other than that I think this album is HORRIBLE even though I am a HUGE Project 86. Buy "Drawing Black Lines" or "Songs To Burn Your Bridges By" if you are new to P86, NOT THIS ONE! Submitted by Cris (Rockford, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Project 86 Songs To Burn Your Bridges By CD (2003)
Rival Factions music CDs
$12.45 This is the fourth album from Orange County rockers Project 86, who started out in 1996 and have had a rather tortured experience in the industry ever since. Having dallied briefly with a major label and left the Tooth & Nail stable in 2003, the band is back together with the latter label in 2004 and back to making the tough, abrasive (but explicitly Christian) punk metal fusion that has become its trademark. Sonically, this stuff is top-notch, thanks to producers Aaron Sprinkle, J.R. McNeely, and Matt Hyde; the sound is dense and crunchy, the chord progressions are interesting, the various sonic elements nicely balanced. The problem is that there is not a single sung melody to be found on this album. That doesn't have to be a problem -- rock, especially punk rock, does not necessarily require melodies. But the instrumental parts are so well crafted and the chord progressions so logical and interesting ...

| | Daniel Higgs Ancestral Songs CD (2006)
Rival Factions CD music
$12.95 Daniel Higgs' first solo album available in more than an obscure limited edition, Ancestral Songs is an old-fashioned piece of cracked acid folk. The opening track,"Living in the Kingdom of Death, has the obsessively repetitive lyrical structure of a Jandek song, though its simple and rather traditional acoustic folk setting is considerably less studied in its strangeness than is Jandek's wont. The ten-minute-plus epic "Thy Chosen Bride" is in two parts, the first being a melodic improvisation for solo banjo that suddenly shifts into a sparse, somewhat disturbing poetic reading delivered over slow, unchanging banjo strums. The truly strange "Moharsing and Schoenhut" follows, a lo-fi, distorted duet for jaw harp and toy piano that makes both of those seemingly child-like instruments sound like implements of destruction. An eleven-and-a-half minute drone for distorted electric guitar, "Are You of the Body?" follows; the first half is pleasant but unremarkable, but when ...
