(1 Customer Review)
As part of Stax's Very Best series, Little Milton Campbell is spotlighted on 17 tracks recorded between 1971 and 1975 for the Memphis based label. While Little Milton had previously recorded for Sun, Bobbin, and Checker, it was during his tenure with Stax that he made the transition from gritty electric blues to slickly produced, horn-laden, soul-blues. This set is aimed at the casual listener and includes such R&B charted singles as "If That Ain't a Reason (For Your Woman to Leave You)," "What It Is," "Tin Pan Alley" and Milton's rendition of the Charlie Rich hit of the previous year "Behind Closed Doors." This is a decent sampler for the novice at a mid-line price. ~ Al Campbell

Very Best Of Little Milton album
$26.79 This is a European compact disc reissue of Canned Heat's Live in Europe (1971) -- which was also released as Canned Heat Concert (Recorded Live in Europe) (1970) in the U.K. The short-lived lineup heard here features Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals) Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/vocals/harmonica), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass), Aldolfo "Fido" De La Parra (drums), as well as Harvey Mandel (guitar) who had replaced Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar). Arguably more significant however is that these are among the last gigs with Wilson. Sadly, less than six months later he overdosed prior to the Heat's fall of 1970 European outing. The tour had been spawned by the unanticipated hit cover of Wilbert Harrison's "Let's Work Together" taken off of the album Future Blues (1970) which became their most successful side throughout Europe. With Mandel driving the band instrumentally, there is an incremental shift towards more jammed out interaction and completely rearranged melodies. This is immediately exemplified by the loose and funky "That's All Right Mama." Alternately, Wilson's dark visage can be heard on the lonesome and harrowing "Pulling Hair Blues" and the improvised "London Blues," a number likewise marked by his biting bottleneck slide guitar solos and haunting off-key vocals. Although the track list portrays it as a medley, "Back out on the Road" bears little in common with "On the Road Again." Rather than, at the very least, a verse from each song being played, the latter is only alluded to. The live reading of "Let's Work Together" is as vivacious as the original, with the Heat going all out for their appropriately appreciative audience. Until which time Live Concert 70 sees a North American CD debut -- hopefully with bonus material -- this BGO pressing is recommended to any and all interested parties. ~ Lindsay Planer

| | Chad Laughing Intimacy & Isolation CD (2007)
Very Best Of Little Milton CD music
$9.59 Chad Laughing plays sad, quiet, acoustic tunes - the emotional kind that speak of heartache and the human condition on a realistic level. Luckily for his loyal following fan base, he inserts incredibly comedic, real-life stories, jokes and banter in between. Like every good performer should, Chad makes sure his set will leave you with the satisfied feeling that usually only comes from a fantastic first date or the greatest romantic comedy you've ever seen. 'My favourite musical act in Toronto, because he makes me laugh ... Chad Laughing!' Molle Dorst, Oct 29, 2006 The songs are acoustic - quiet and sad. Emerging from the ashes of folk-rock band City Folk, Chad Laughing's new songs are a mixture of city and country - a result of moving from the suburbs to the bustling metropolis of downtown. "I, like most people in North America live in the centre of a huge city. With this solo project I wanted to get away from the rootsy, folky sound of my past projects and move toward something a little more sophisticated," explained Laughing. Chad Laughing forms the complete 'band.' He is currently putting together a collection of musicians to support him for various performances around the city. Following the break up of ...
