Joachim Kühn's Kalimba is very much a co-op, featuring the leader-pianist (who is also heard briefly on his fiery alto sax), drummer Ramon Lopez, and Majid Bekkas on various string instruments and occasional vocals. The most intriguing sections are when the music is strongly influenced by Middle Eastern styles. There are occasional dry spots where the trio stays on one chord or in one pattern for a bit too long. Also, Bekkas' singing is an acquired taste. However much of the music is fresh and unpredictable, keeping one guessing as it straddles the boundaries between post-bop jazz and folk music influences from the countries (Germany, Morocco and Spain) of the musicians. No one plays it safe and the results are often invigorating. Worth checking out. ~ Scott Yanow

With the release of This Way, Acoustic Alchemy's guitarists Greg Carmichael and Miles Gilderdale celebrate a remarkable two decades since Red Dust & Spanish Lace established the British ensemble as an ever-evolving powerhouse of contemporary jazz. Carmichael and Gilderdale's natural chemistry is very apparent on this set of loose and spirited songs, as is the soloing by the complementing musicians on such jazzy tracks as "Egg," which has a very British, blues-drenched, straight-ahead sound. By contrast, "Ernie" has an exotic Latin jazz flavor complete with great solos by Terry Disley, Jeff Kashiwa, and trombonist Dennis Rollins. Rick Braun makes a guest appearance on "Carlos the King," a racy rock, Latin, and blues fusion that also features Gilderdale's electric guitar and Greg Grainger's percussive energy. With as many brilliant players as there are in the ensemble, the concept of two acoustic guitar players is still the emotional heartbeat of the band's sound. Carmichael and Gilderdale's outstanding playing on "Out of Nowhere" and "This Way" is a sure testament to that concept. Witchfynde's third album, Cloak and Dagger, arrived after a near three-year hiatus from which most people never expected the band to return. Still, the British quartet led by enigmatic guitarist Montalo weren't quite ready to call it a day just yet, drafting singer Luther Beltz and bassist Pete Surgey to attempt a comeback with this release. Sadly for them, this was not to be. Too much time had elapsed and the band's inexplicable toning down of both their heavy metal aggression as well as their dark and sinister attitude with second album Stagefright had upset many among their original fan base. Whether these fans felt truly betrayed, or simply sensed a lack of conviction whose "whys" or "wherefores" could hardly be expressed in words, no amount of renewed purpose to the cause of heavy metal or demonic subject matter could help Cloak and Dagger repair the wounds. For the most part, songs like "The Devil's Playground," "Cry Wolf," and the title track offer pedestrian '80s metal with little to write home about, while showcasing new man Beltz's questionable and excessive usage of a falsetto style made famous by King Diamond -- you know the one. One of the more experimental Sun Ra albums, STRANGE STRINGS features the interstellar maestro and band improvising on a selection of exotic stringed instruments, such as ukuleles and kotos, few, if any of which they've ever played before. The result is fascinating (in a good way), juxtaposing the Arkestra's more bizarre random sounds with their conventional bass, horns, piano, and percussion, and producing an otherworldly cacophony whose jagged aural texture is in constant flux.
Strange Strings is a somewhat legendary album from the mid-'60s. "Worlds Approaching" is a great tune, anchored by a bass ostinato and tympani and featuring several fantastic solos, including Marshall Allen on oboe, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, John Gilmore on tenor, and Sun Ra on electric piano. Off and on throughout the tune, Bugs Hunter applies near-lethal doses of reverb, giving the piece a very odd but interesting sound. "Strange Strings" is one of those songs that is likely to inspire some sort of "you call that music?" comment from your grandmother, or even from open-minded friends. It sounds like they raided the local pawnshop for anything with strings on it, then passed them out to the bandmembers. It's difficult to tell if some of these instruments have been prepared in some way, or if they're simply being played by untutored hands. There are also lots of drums and some viola playing from Ronnie Boykins that is also treated heavily with reverb. Despite the cacophony, there is a definite ebb and flow to the piece and what seem like different movements or themes. Whatever you think of the music contained, there's no denying that it produced some of the most remarkable sounds of the mid-'60s. If you don't like "out," stay clear of this one.
