For their sophomore outing, AN END HAS A START, the U.K. indie-rock act Editors present another set of brooding, post-punk-inspired songs. While sonic similarities to Interpol remain undeniable, particularly in the dry vocal delivery of singer/guitarist Tom Smith, the Birmingham-based ensemble actually leans more towards the expansive sound of Bloc Party's second record, A WEEKEND IN THE CITY, here--not surprising since both albums share in-demand producer Jacknife Lee.
Given Lee's knack for pristine, guitar-heavy arrangements, Editors are able to cut loose with a grand aesthetic that is best embodied by the bold opening track, "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors," which takes cues from heralded shoegazer heroes Ride in its reverbed six-string squalls. Though Editors continue to wear their influences on their sleeves, Smith's earnest, if slightly detached, demeanor and the band's wire-tight tunes allow them to maintain their own identity.
Following the debut release 'The Back Room', the English indie-rock band is back with their 2nd album. Their brand of sweeping indie rock is frequently compared to the sound of bands such as Interpol, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, Franz Ferdinand, Kitchens of Distinction, The Chameleons, Big Country and U2. 1st single: Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors. Editors An End Has A Start Songs An End Has A Start Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Wayfaring & thoughtful Every time I heard a tune by the Editors over the radio I would make an effort to discover "who is this I am listening to?". This group is well orchestrated with colorful, wayfaring and thoughtful lyrics. They have a "sound" throughout their repertoire that does not disappoint. When I ask people "do you know the Editors?", they say no. When I play "Smokers Outside...." they say, "OH! I've heard that, I love that song!!" There are tunes in this album that will be a pleasure to add to any listening mix. Submitted by arthur (Sentinel Butte, ND, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
a copy Joy Division The Editors deserve acclaim, respect and success. 'The Back Room' from 2005 was a remarkable debut and carved a perfect niche with a unique sound. OK, there were shades of numerous other Brit-rock bands there, plus more than a hint of Joy Division bleakness. It was an album with real power, some storming tracks, and one that had your tongue hanging out for the follow up. Here it is, so shut your mouth.
As a single (even if that term has relevance anymore) "Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors" is a storming 5 minute piece that builds a mood and sets a standard. It has dips and contrasts within the melody, but when all the drums / guitars / vocals factors all mesh in together, it becomes huge. Still with pathos, and still with one of the best song titles in ages.
The title track really could have been from that first album, as there are the same screaming chords, around a very tight production and nagging hook. Tom Smith's vocals are always emotive, whilst being laudable and audible. Yes, you can hear every word he preaches. But there's nothing hidden behind any part of this album. Some very dark (but rewarding) corners and introspective shadows maybe, but it's all out there to soak up.

$14.49 Elliott Smith's death in 2003 left a cavernous hole in the world of popular music. Tender, intimate, and painfully honest, the songs in Smith's catalogue capture the fragility of human existence with rare, breathtaking beauty. On his first posthumous release, Smith reaffirms his status as an extraordinarily gifted artist, giving fans yet another reason to mourn his tragic loss.

$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.

$12.09 Almost three years after the Arcade Fire's 2004 full-length debut, FUNERAL, stunned indie-rock fans with its majestic scope and romantic ferocity, the Montreal-based ensemble returned with NEON BIBLE. Although the album lacks the from-out-of-nowhere punch of the former record, it serves as a fitting successor, with the group's sweeping sound enhanced by even more prominent layers of piano, organ, strings, and percussion.
