In some circles, Mickey Jupp is something of a minor legend, a roots rocker with excellent taste and a cutting wit, best heard on the songs "Switchboard Susan" and "You'll Never Get Me Up in One of Those," both covered by Nick Lowe. Basher's endorsement is a clear indication that Jupp is a pub rocker, a guy who specializes in laid-back good times, so it shouldn't come as a great surprise that his first band, Legend, was proto-pub, an unabashed celebration of old-time rock & roll, filled with three-chord Chuck Berry rockers and doo wop backing vocals. Nevertheless, listening to their 1970 LP is a bit of a shock, as it's completely disassociated with anything that was happening in 1970, even with Tony Visconti enlisted as their producer. Legend's sensibility is ahead of its time in its retro thinking, pointing the way to the rock & roll revival of the late '70s and not even that similar to the country-rock of Eggs Over Easy or Bees Make Honey, as this has little of the rustic feel of the Band: it's just straight-up oldies rock, a trait emphasized by those incessant doo wop harmonies that are on almost every cut on this LP (but do disappear on the bonus live cuts on the Repertoire reissue, possibly because they were too busy playing to harmonize). Those harmonies and the light, almost goofy, touch of Jupp's writing here distinguish Legend and also illustrate why they made no waves in 1970; it's hard to see the counterculture getting roused over the verse "If you were an apple you'd be/Good good eating/If you were a book you'd be/Good good reading." These slightly silly flourishes do have a lot in common with the wry humor of Nick Lowe, who at this time was denying this mischievous streak as he attempted to sound like Crosby, Stills & Nash, but at this point, Jupp was largely on his own doing this light, good-time pub rock. That may be why it sank without a trace at the time, but heard apart from its era, Legend is a minor delight, one of the first flowerings of the pub rock sensibility. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Legend
$23.75 Kaleidoscope World is the Chills' essential document, a collection of tracks from early and mid-'80s EPs, singles, and compilation cuts. The influence of Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd is stronger on these early tracks than it would be on subsequent releases, both on the easygoing sing along numbers and the more experimental outings. The highlight (of both the album and the Chills' career) is their New Zealand hit single, the haunting 'Pink Frost'.
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12" KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost." Kaleidoscope World is the Chills' essential document, although it's not an album but a collection of tracks from early- and mid-'80s EPs, singles, and compilation cuts. Perhaps that's not surprising: the Chills are more skilled at crafting interesting odds and ...

Legend
$26.49 Released in 1972, Legend's third album, Moonshine, features the "Mark III" lineup comprising John Bobin, Mo Witham, Bob Clouter and the legendary Mickey Jupp. The sound is fairly raw throughout, with the kind of loose, relaxed musicianship that comes from pro cats getting down and having fun. Rock, blues, country and a touch ...

| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (2008) (Import) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak; Germany
Legend
$18.75 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from ...

| | Driver X Super 12 CD (2002)
Legend
$10.15 Billboard Magazine"Driven down pop alley: Driver X is solid proof that earnest, pop infected rock music still lives deep in the heart of New York City. The quintet, ably fronted by singer/tunesmith Will Croxton, is currently shopping a demo that will tickle the ears of listeners who subscribe to the intimate introspective fare of bands like Travis and Coldplay. Such standout cuts as the strummy "Daylight" and the delightfully harmonious "Carry Me Home" manage to exude boyish sensitivity without ever sounding wimpy or cloying. Croxton and his bandmates do a good job of keeping the arrangements muscular and reasonably aggressive without ever overpowering Croxton's notably intelligent lyrics and melodies.Jane MagazineThis Brooklyn rock band is part punk rock, part hook-driven pop, with smart cool lyrics that you'll commit to memory in no time. I cleaned my closet out while blaring it and the time flew. THE BAND:WILL CROXTON - singer, songwriter, guitarist - started with the DC-based garage-punk band DT and the Shakes. The band released the acclaimed EP "Smooth Studio Crafted Teen Fodder" and followed with 2 more albums. He relocated to New York City where he co-formed the indie-rock lab rat Idle and released 3 cds (and various tracks) on the Big Deal label from 1993 to 1998. Autocratic envy and a booming economy fueled the band's split in 1999 and Croxton formed Driver X. He aspires to Driver X being as badass as J.T. Walsh.BRIAN PATTERSON - drums. To his knowledge, Brian Patterson is the only Irish-Jew to ever immigrate to New York City from the voodoo drenched suburbs of Savannah, Georgia. Raised on a steady diet of ham and collard greens, kugel, gefilte fish, and pork cracklin's, he is prone to dance the Jig and the Hora simultaneously! Known affectionately to his friends as "McHeeb", He has never been able to distinguish between pedophilic rabbis and kindly, good-natured priests...or was that the other way around? In any event, he remains deeply troubled. As with many people blessed with Irish blood, Brian has a natural talent for hitting things. Once his sister developed significant scar tissue and was able to deflect the blows, Brian moved on to music. Drums and piano to be sure, saxophone was just too fragile. Today, with a profoundly expensive and useless college degree in tow, Brian continues to hit things to musical accompaniment and sells beer to allow himself to be truly at peace with ...
