Globe Trotter
$55.98 Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary scatting. The main exception is the centerpiece track, a nine-minute take on the Duke Ellington standard "Take the A Train," that gives Fitzgerald ample room to stretch out vocally. Although fans of her scat work might be somewhat disappointed by this mainstream set, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD serves to remind just how gifted a stylist Fitzgerald was in the pop genre as well.

| | Dino: The Essential Dean Martin CD (2004)
Globe Trotter
$10.89 Nearly a decade after Dean Martin's death, the crooner's fans were finally given the definitive Dino collection. While there was already a two-disc summation of Martin's Capitol recordings, as well as several compilations of his Reprise material, the single-disc, 30-track DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN contains a generous selection of the best of his work, culling from both labels' vaults. Steubenville, Ohio's favorite son became a singing star in the 1950s, mostly by virtue of his smooth, easy charm, apparent both in his vocal style and his public image. That charm is crystallized here--the South American lilt of "Sway;" the spare, countryish "Memories Are Made of This" (not insignificantly covered later by Johnny Cash); the laissez-faire swing of "Ain't That a Kick in the Head"--it all bespeaks an uncommon coolness that was Martin's to burn. DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN catches all of his best-known tunes, from the aforementioned gems to the perennial Reprise-era sing-along "Everybody Loves Somebody," but it fills in the spaces between with lots of equally lovable tracks, or did you think Glen Campbell had the patent on "Gentle on My Mind?"

| | Dianne Reeves Good Night, & Good Luck CD (2005)
Globe Trotter
$12.55 The musical accompaniment to George Clooney's biopic of journalist Ed Murrow, GOODNIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK, is crammed with contemporary jazz versions of 1940s and '50s favorites like "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and Dinah Washington's novelty hit "TV Is the Thing This Year" (minus the original's slightly risqué verses). Reeves, together with a combo that includes saxophonist Matt Catingub and pianist Peter Martin, conjures an authentic cigarette-and-Martini soaked atmosphere on an exceptional soundtrack that's also a fine album in its own right.
| | Spyro Gyra Night Before Christmas CD (2008)
Globe Trotter
$10.49 If there's one band that pretty much defines the appellation smooth jazz, it would have to be Spyro Gyra. Their combination of slick, inspired musicianship and lighthearted melodies have made them decade-spanning stars. A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS finds saxophonist Jay Beckenstein and company re-inventing Christmas favorites. Ex-Manhattan Transfer singer Janis Siegel joins Gyra drummer Bonny B in a bluesy duet for "Baby It's Cold Outside," and former member Dave Samuels guests, lending his shimmering vibes to "Winter Wonderland." A NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS is a nice seasonal topping for your holiday treats.
Spyro Gyra: Julio Fernandez (guitar); Jay Beckenstein (saxophone); Tom Schuman (piano); Scott Ambush (bass instrument); Bonny B (drum).
Audio Mixer: Doug Oberkircher.

| | Christine Lavin Sometimes Mother Really Does Know Best CD (2004) Digipak
Globe Trotter
$11.99 Christine Lavin has gained a rep as a seriously funny gal, and Sometimes Mother Really Does Know Best, recorded live in Colorado Springs, will do nothing to change that. As with Subway Series in 2001, Lavin's heady mix of humor and intelligence works best before a live audience, sort of like a standup comic with a guitar. In fact, she mixes in spoken monologues between her songs, asking penetrating questions like -- why in the heck is a Bob Dylan song adorning a Victoria's Secret ad? Her satire on pieces like "Strangers Talk to Me" and "Wind Chimes" is more gentle than mean-spirited as she makes witty observations on her life as a traveling musician and the foibles of middle-class love. There's a bizarre a cappella piece titled "The Tocobel Canon" (read: Taco Bell), the type of choral piece Bach might have written had he lived in the 21st century and hawked his wares to the highest bidder. A number of these songs, like "Ballad of a Ballgame," have been drawn from earlier works (Beau Woes and Other Problems of Modern Life), while longtime fans will also enjoy new material like the title cut. The longest piece on the album is the epic "The Legal Ramifications of a Crackerjack Vendor Who Works in Yankee Stadium," the results of an attempt to honor the oldest Crackerjack vendor at the stadium only to be met with possible legal ramifications. For those who like their singer/songwriter observations laced with a big dose of humor, Lavin's Sometimes Mother Really Does Know Best will more than fit the bill. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
"Lavin knows how to keep her audience guessing, thinking and laughing at the same time." - Washington Post "An enchanting stage performer." - Cosmopolitan Long acclaimed as a "comic observer of contemporary manners" (The New York Times), the hilarious Christine Lavin quite literally shines in live performance as she straps on a miner's headlamp and twirls her glowing batons. But the real sparkle comes from Lavin's sung and spoken wit - this singer-songwriter-guitarist-creative firecracker regales and involves her legion of fans with riotously acute original songs, comic monologues, quizzes, contests, and, in this case, her quest to identify and crown Mr. Colorado Springs in the audience at the 2003 benefit concert captured on this CD."Sometimes Mother Really Does Know Best" is the award-winning Ms. Lavin's seventeenth album in a recording career that stretches back to 1981 and a touring schedule that encompasses almost 52 weeks a year. She also manages to juggle ever-expanding sidelines in freelance writing, radio program hosting, her serious obsessions with knitting, cooking, and her cultural heroine, Dame Edna, and using the Internet for instant-action song postings reflecting current events. Some of the ten songs on "Sometimes Mother" have appeared on previous Lavin studio and live CDs, but never like this! One of Christine's signature compositions, "What Was I Thinking?," resurfaces with updated topical needling of Martha Stewart, while the gentle, affectionately rueful "You Look Pretty Good for Your Age" is wrapped around Christine's search for Mr. Colorado Springs. Five other favorites are captured "live" for the first time, including the tranquil-to-berserk tropical ordeal recounted in "Wind Chimes," the introductory "Strangers Talk to Me," and the anthem of the uncoordinated, "Ballad of a Ballgame." There are also three new songs presented - Joanne Hammill's increasing frantic round, "A Question of Tempo (When I'm Under Pressure)"; Christine's battle with bureaucracy, "The Legal Ramifications of a Crackerjack Vendor Who Works in Yankee Stadium"; and the closing title song, with its moral lesson about the consequences of "a permanent reminder of a temporary fad," be it eyebrow ring or facelift, a controversial modern day topic. At least half the fun of this CD comes from Christine's giddy but incisively sarcastic song introductions and a half-dozen comic monologues. "What kind of a ridiculous glamour t

| | Dave Britt Sweet Temptation CD (2004)
Globe Trotter
$10.15 Here are some interviews with Dave Britt and responses to "Sweet Temptation"The State Newspaper - Posted on Fri, Jun. 18, 2004 After a frenetic band career, David Britt goes it aloneBy OTIS R. TAYLOR JR.Staff WriterIf one person in Columbia's music scene can say he's done it all, it's Dave Britt. He he's been a bartender and booking agent for downtown clubs. Currently he represents bands and books tours for 4TP Productions. And in his free time, he's a well-known local musician. But even Britt has something new in his record crate. Like Nick Lachey, he has gone "SoulO" (the name of Mr. Jessica Simpson's dismal solo album). For Britt - who has performed in bands including The Dharma Dogs, Amos Britt Project and Interstellar Groove - going solo is like busting loose."After you're in a band for six months a year and you build a name ... if that band breaks up, you've lost all that work," Britt said."It's my name and nobody is going to take that away from me."Britt will release his debut full-length CD, "Sweet Temptations," on June 26 at Headliners. The disc, a mix of alternative folk and indie laments, is a collaboration with local musician and producer Todd Britton.Last year, the pair recorded Britt's EP "Bent on Breaking," which stepped away from the mundane sound most singer/songwriters fall into."I really wanted it to have a good flow, and I think we achieved it," Britt said of the album. "It was a real comfortable feeling in the studio."I think if I go to a different studio next time, I'm still going to bring him in."Britt's latest band collaboration, Psuedophrentic, was an interesting shift in styles for a man whose previous groups were on the jam fringe.Psuedophrentic was a hip-hop and reggae rock band that covered such songs as Dr. Dre's "Ain't Nuthin' but a G Thang.""Sweet Temptations" shows an evolved songwriter and musician who no longer wants to exist anonymously under the guise of a band name.He wants to be alone."Being onstage by myself has made me have to be a better musician because you can't hide in the mix of a lot of guitars and drums and stuff," Britt said."It's cool having creative control. If something doesn't work out, I've just got myself to blame."While concentrating on his career and promoting the careers of others, Britt still finds time to build up the town's overall music scene.Columbia doesn't have a true listening room where people can sit down and enjoy intimate acoustic music.Solo artists can always play at menu-venues such as Mellow Mushroom, but Britt wanted something more music friendly. He has held two singer/songwriter nights at Headliners. Because of their success, he plans to make them a monthly event. "There's a void for that kind of scene here," Britt said. "I was having a hard time finding a platform to play, so I wanted to create something that could grow."What's next for a guy who has done it all in Columbia?"To be able to travel from New York to Florida and have a 50- to 100-person draw in almost any market you play and to be able to pay bills and reinvest your money," he said.Britt will hit the road to reach that goal. Let's hope it doesn't get too lonely out there.Reach Taylor at (803) 771-8362 or otaylor@thestate.com.MORE ON DAVE BRITTThe band: Dave Britt and, uh, more Dave BrittSound: Acoustic-based but not the average boring singer/songwriter stuffInfluences: Most recently, Iron & Wine and GrandaddyBase: Columbia 9 QUESTIONS - Step Out of the Line - May1. Who are you, and why am I interviewing you? For the readers who've never heard your music, give a brief description.I am a nobody for certain, and I guess I'm being interviewed because a somebody wasn't available at this time. Describing your music yourself is kind of like describing your own personality. You might be like, "I think I'm a nice guy," while everybody else is like, "What an asshole." But here goes. I would like to think of my new stuff as hook-oriented rock with emphasis on melody and lyrics. Music for dis

| | Duke Jordan Flight To Jordan CD (1960) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Globe Trotter
$8.09 Duke Jordan made his mark in jazz in the late 1940s as one of bebop innovator Charlie Parker's regular pianists, but he didn't blossom as a composer until the hard-bop era of the mid-'50s. FLIGHT TO JORDAN, his 1960 Blue Note debut, captures Jordan at a creative peak. The album features a slightly unusual combination of musicians: Reggie Workman, who would soon thereafter make his own mark in jazz's avant-garde sector; Stanley Turrentine, whose lusciously smooth, big-toned tenor would establish him as a leading light of the soul-jazz movement; and the fine, under-recorded Jamaican trumpeter Dizzy Reece. The latter's tart approach contrasts wonderfully to Turrentine's sweetly earthy sound. As a bonus, this remastered reissue includes two bonus tracks, one a trio take of the beloved standard "I Should Care."
