| | Al Jarreau The Very Best of: an Excellent Adventure CD (2009) Remastered
Plays Ellington, Duke
$14.85 Vocalist Al Jarreau is one of the most successful singers in history. He has scored hits on Billboard's Jazz, R&B, Adult Contemporary, and Contemporary Jazz charts. He's won multiple Grammys and sold millions of records. Rhino has assembled 15 tracks that represent his long career with Warner Brothers and even cross-licensed a couple from Universal's GRP and Verve imprints. In addition to the 15 career-spanning cuts ranging roughly from 1975 to 1988 with a couple of tunes thrown in from the current decade, there is a new song entitled "Excellent Adventure," produced by the team of Amhir "?uestlove" Thompson and James Poyser, the same pair that produced Al Green's successful LAY IT DOWN. Fiona Frawley assembled this compilation and did a stellar job, including not only ...

| | Donny Hathaway Collection CD (1990)
Plays Ellington, Duke
$8.75 Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and ...
| | Jon Balke Siwan CD (2009)
Plays Ellington, Duke
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Hassell's horn is given ample solo space along with the Algerian violinist Eddine M'Kachiche; they both improvise against the expert zarb (Iranian hand drum) playing of Pedram Khavar Zamini. It's a heady ...
| | Jan Garbarek Dresden: In Concert CDs (2009)
Plays Ellington, Duke
$23.29 It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets--from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation--to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear. Garbarek plays tenor, ...
| | State Fair CD (1996) Original Soundtrack
Plays Ellington, Duke
$9.99 Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II wrote State Fair as a movie musical, and upon its release in 1945, three of its six songs -- "It Might as Well Be Spring," "That's for Me," and "It's a Grand Night for Singing" -- became chart hits for Dick Haymes (who starred in the film) and for several other artists as well. The movie itself, though slighter than Rodgers & Hammerstein's stage successes of the era, shared many of their themes. The restlessness of "It Might as Well Be Spring" recalled the seasonal lustiness of Carousel's "June Is Busting Out All Over," while "All I Owe Ioway" echoed the regional pride of the title song from Oklahoma! In transforming the film into a stage show 50 years later, a team of producers and directors that included Hammerstein's son James faced the immediate problem of finding more music. There were two songs cut from the original movie score and five written by Rodgers alone for the 1962 screen remake that might have been used, but only one, "More Than Just a Friend," was ...
