| | Polyphonic Spree The Fragile Army CD Polyphonic Spree Discography of CDs
On 2007's THE FRAGILE ARMY, the many members of the Polyphonic Spree trade in their colorful robes for black military-inspired uniforms, effectively altering their collective look from JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR to Pink Floyd's THE WALL. Those expecting a radical sonic shift are met halfway: while frontman Tim De Laughter and company have crafted a denser and moodier album than past Spree outings, ARMY is far from dark, a point best illustrated by the restless "Get Up and Go," which boasts an edgier guitar-and-piano-heavy approach that nonetheless features the Texan group's signature symphonic, pomp-and-circumstance singalongs. And anyone worried about a dearth of trilling flute lines and soaring melodies will be warmly reassured by the jubilant "Running Away," which proves that the Spree may change, but they're still raising their hands to the sky.

Spin (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he band tests the limits of its quasi-religious, happy-all-the-time ethos with songs that surprisingly explore the range of human emotion." Uncut (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[G]utsier than their previous angelic hippie singalongs, with hints of Bowie's glam era peeping through the billowing curtains of harmonies..." Magnet (p.106) - "The soaring 'Running Away' and the delicate 'We Crawl' are textbook shiny, hopeful Spree. The band is just giving it to us straighter than before." CMJ (p.43) - "Tracks like 'Running Away' still maintain a certain level of spiritual uplift, but they do so with hummable hooks and tasteful brevity.....ARMY is Spree's first bull's eye." The Fragile Army album
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have ...
| | Minus 5 I Don't Know Who I Am CD (2003) Let The War Against Music
The Fragile Army CD music
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." Meshing a slide guitar with a brooding lo-fi feel, the song's alt-country leanings uneasily shift into the electronic-tinged ...

The Fragile Army music CDs
$12.59 Everything about the Polyphonic Spree is voluminous and unique. Featuring 20-some members, including a theremin player, a flautist, a French horn player, a full choir, and an electronic soundscaper, among others, the band performs dressed in flowing, white robes, heightening its image as a spiritually oriented "family." Among the Spree's influences are the lush studio innovations of Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney/George Martin-esque symphonic pop, and sunny indie acts like Apples in Stereo and the Flaming Lips. The result is a noise that is majestic, infectious, ...

The Fragile Army songs
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
The Fragile Army album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of ...
