(6 Customer Reviews)
With six highly celebrated official hip-hop albums under their belts, Adam Horowitz, Adam Yauch, and Michael Diamond have little left to prove to rap fans, except perhaps that they can still rock their instruments like they once did. With this in mind, THE MIX-UP brings listeners a full-length, jazz-funk jam-band exercise in a similar vein to the 1996 release, THE IN-SOUND FROM WAY-OUT, or the instrumental cuts on ILL COMMUNICATION.
None of the Beasties go anywhere near the mic on THE MIX-UP (except for the odd whistle), but thankfully, and as the thorough tracklist proves positive, all three can still hold their own in a jam session. Most cuts rely on a Hammond organ groove and funky wah-guitar, with "4th Street Break" and "The Rat Cage" proving especially tight. True students of the post-modern pilfer approach to music-making that they are, one can even hear traces of Lips Inc.'s "Funky Town" creeping into the Beastie's guitar riffs of "Freaky Hijiki."

Beastie Boys Mix-Up Songs Mix-Up Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews coming soon to an elevator near you Not having an advance notion of what to expect, this non-vocal work was quite the surprise. In and of itself there are some catchy melodies - but it's sort of false advertising. When one buys a Beastie Boys CD - there is an expectation level to hear a certain type of music that's the band's trademark. This CD did not deliver. Had I heard some cuts w/o knowing in advance who was playing - The Beasties would not have ever come to mind. Submitted by fried003 (Alexandria, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Awesome!!! I got this CD not knowing it was an instumental. From the beginning I kept listening for lyrics but I was so into the music that it just didn't need any. I have listened to this cd from front to back many times and it has been the most enjoyable Beastie Boys album I have ever listened to! Amazing! Finally another insturmental by the beasties. If you liked "the in sound from wayout" you will love this album. Somtimes people forget that these three rappers are great musicians aswell. Thier musicianship shows in this great peice of work. Submitted by thedaveut (layton, Utah) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 4 found this helpful.
Best instrumental album out in 2007 The Beastie Boys shock the nation with an all instrumental album that blows away any of the 2007 releases. Killer keys, guitars, drums, and various instruments rock the beats and set you off for a groovin' 70s funk ride with a twist of hip hop and dub fusion. Purchase Mix-Up CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Chills Kaleidoscope World CD (1986) (Import) Import; Australia
Mix-Up album
$23.75 KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD contains 10 bonus tracks and represents everything the band recorded through early 1986, including all of the LOST EP, and the I LOVE MY LEATHER JACKET/THE GREAT ESCAPE 12"
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD, The Chills' 18-track compilation culled from The Chills early and mid-'80s EPs and singles, is highlighted by the song "Pink Frost."
The Chills' Martin Phillipps mixes up melodic pop with elements of garage rock and punk, creating songs with a sweet melancholy all their own. Phillipps has always been the focus of the Chills, writing and singing the band's songs. His group has also rivaled Menudo in its sheer number of personnel changes. In a just world, the Chills would have sold just as many records.
KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD showcases the shifting line-ups and many moods of the early to mid-'80s Chills. "Rolling Moon" captures a mood of shambling joy, its simple, repeated keyboard riff sounding like a distant caravan crossing New Zealand's big-sky country. "Pink Frost" ...
| | Tool 10,000 Days CD (2006)
Mix-Up CD music
$11.75 To its legion of fans, everything the band Tool does is an event, but the elaborate plan behind their sporadic release schedule--roughly five years, on average, between albums--is due primarily to the time and effort the band packs into each successive effort. To title their fourth album 10,000 DAYS, then, isn't as much an exaggeration as it would seem. Tool are America's most consummate ...
| | Amy Winehouse Back To Black CD (2006)
Mix-Up music CDs
$12.49 BACK TO BLACK's production is an artful blend of sophisticated '60s R&B and 21st-century stylistic poaching, with "Tears Dry on Their Own" incorporating elements of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Winehouse sounding like Billie Holiday fronting a reggae band on the old-fashioned cheating song "Just Friends." Densely packed with musical history and often conjuring a dark, Portishead-esque atmosphere, BACK TO BLACK is a sumptuous-sounding collection freighted with blunt confessionals of a lush life.
It doesn't take much listening to Amy Winehouse's ...

| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Mix-Up album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have made a nice counterpoint as Stevie Nicks complemented Christine McVie's tunes with her adventures, bringing an important change ...
