On her first album for Vanguard Records, alternative country singer-songwriter Kim Richey hits for the fences: recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios with producer Giles Martin, CHINESE BOXES is less a pop crossover attempt than an ambitious work that sounds like a country-rock-influenced version of Elvis Costello's IMPERIAL BEDROOM (which of course was produced by Giles's legendary father, George Martin). The varied arrangements range from the ornate chamber pop of "Jack and Jill" to the sparse, jazzy "The Absence of Your Company," hitting different musical and emotional touchstones along the way.Uncut (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "There's plenty of bittersweet soul here, not least 'Pretty Picture' and 'The Absence Of Your Company'..." No Depression (p.94) - "[A] great vehicle for Richey's lovely, clear-toned voice, which is a throb or two away from Karen Carpenter comparisons." Q (Magazine) (p.123) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[S]ongs such as 'Turn Me' are beautifully sung..." Chinese Boxes album
$12.59 Following in the footsteps of alt-country icons Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer, and Maria McKee, Tift Merritt gilds her sophomore effort, TAMBOURINE, with country-inflected soul, a stylistic crossroads where Nashville and Muscle Shoals meet. Teaming up with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made a U-Turn" (with its bubbling bass and chirping harmonies), the jangly "Stray Paper," and the organ-smothered "Wait It Out."
Blessed with a voice reminiscent of a breathier Dusty Springfield, the native Texan has earned plenty of praise from her peers, resulting in a few noteworthy ...
| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
Chinese Boxes CD music
$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning ...

| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered

$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting ...
| | Lucinda Williams West CD (2007) Digipak
Chinese Boxes album
$11.45 Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears all the hallmarks of her best work: excellent songcraft, poetically tough lyrics, and her angel-on-morphine voice. As an album, it is her most consistent and appealing since 1998's CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.
Williams's seemingly odd choice to work with mainstream pop producer Hal Willner works wonderfully. Willner built the album up from Williams's demo recordings, keeping her original vocals, and creating a sound that shimmers but never loses ...
| | Allison Moorer Mockingbird CD (2008)
Chinese Boxes CD music
$13.05 Much like her older sister Shelby Lynne did with JUST A LITTLE LOVIN', renegade country singer Alison Moorer starts 2008 with an album of covers. But where Lynne's album was dedicated to the late Dusty Springfield, MOCKINGBIRD is an eclectic mix that includes 12 songs written by or popularized by women who inspired Moorer (including herself--she penned the album's sole original, the title track). MOCKINGBIRD is a widely varied collection of songs ranging from a slinky ...
| | Thingy To The Innocent CD (2000)
Chinese Boxes music CDs
$12.15 The indie world breeds numerous four-band, self-produced, writer/musician auteurs, and perhaps Rob Crow is one of the most underrated. On To the Innocent, Crow plays vocals and guitars along with Elea Tenuta, his partner from the marginally popular Heavy Vegetable. Here the two assemble soft melodies and meticulous guitar work, along with cheap rhythm machines, to create a hovering symphony of understatement. Crow's gift is his knack for subtlety, which he rides endlessly on To the Innocent. Tracks like "Big Dumb Animal" exemplify this lo-fi aesthetic while accentuating ...
