Personnel: Shirley Horn (vocals, piano); Charles Ables (bass instrument); Steve "Syco Steve" Williams (drums); Steve Williams (drum). Liner Note Author: Dan Ouellette. Recording information: Monterey Jazz Festival (09/18/1994). Authors: Tim "T-Bone" Jackson; Jason Olaine. Photographer: Andy Nozaka. Jazz singer and pianist Shirley Horn achieved a measure of fame and success later in her career, but it was well-deserved, as this LIVE disc attests. Horn's voice had a slightly husky, dusky, seen-it-all quality, and her piano playing is succinct, gently surging, and blues-hued. Backed only by a bassist and drummer, Horn holds the audience in the palm of her hand with her intimate renditions of a healthy variety of material, as she beautifully reconstructs songs by Burt Bacharach and Leon Russell, along with some choice standards and rare gems. Shirley Horn's sole appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival took place in 1994 and it is one of her most compelling performances of her career. The often raucous Monterey audience is captivated by her infectious vocals and swinging piano, accompanied by her long time bassist Charles Ables and drummer Steve Williams. Horn's vocal phrasing is devoid of the gimmickry, focusing on bringing the lyrics to life, including a mix of standards, ballads, and modern pop. Horn's mastery of ballads includes her dramatic take of Leon Russell's "A Song for You" with its shimmering piano and a spacious, dreamy setting of "Here's to Life," both songs readily identified with her, along with a sublime "The Look of Love." But she also shows of her considerable piano chops with a jaunty take of "I've Got the World on a String," her playful arrangement of "Foolin' Myself," a driving interpretation of "Hard Hearted Hannah" and a swinging rendition of Oscar Peterson's "Blues for Big Scotia," the sole instrumental of the set. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden Live At The 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival Music Shirley Horn Live At The 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival Songs Live At The 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival Review

| | John Tchicai Big Chief Dreaming CD (2005)
Live At The 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival
$17.09 Look no further than this record for evidence of a global jazz community. On "Big Chief Dreaming", we find an American guitarist who divides his time between Europe and Boston, Massachusetts; a Danish-born saxophonist who has made his home in New York City, California, and southern France; and three Italian musicians who are lynchpins in vital local and national jazz communities. This geographic diversity doesn't hinder their ability to come together as equals, and forge a distinct group identity. In fact, because the musicians are rooted in strong indigenous music scenes, their music can be cosmopolitan in its reach, and universal in its emotional appeal. The quintet's personality is refracted through compositional lenses of Tchicai, Tracanna, and Fewell. Tchicai's tunes draw freely on folkloric sources as well as his own highly developed and utterly contemporary sense of melody. "Prayer for Right Guidance" according to Tchicai, "has some connection to the Native American spirit, which can be heard most clearly in the drums." The melody, however, is pure Tchicai. The hypnotic pulse laid down by bass and drums, with Fewell's chord voicings adding color, inspires contrasting solos from the horns. Tracanna's sinewy lines coil with inner tensions, sometimes they flow smoothly, and sometimes they bristle with irregular phrasing and sharp contours. Tchicai, on the other hand, submits long tones to subtle inflections and builds sturdy thematic passages from small step-wise phrases; listening to him build a solo is to hear the feeling of thought. It's a hallmark of the session that voices as strong and idiosyncratic as these are easily accommodated in the music.Garrison's "The Queen of Ra" is a gem of subtle sophistication, with its contrasting moods, harmonic ambiguities, and references to world musics. Fewell had Don Cherry's Complete Communion and the Egyptian marches of Sun Ra in the back of his mind as he composed this piece for the session. The opening, slightly muted guitar harmonics evokes the sound of African thumb piano, while the two horn players begin a dialog they keep up throughout the tune. When the piece moves ...
