Bar Exam album
$8.39 Das EFX -- part of EPMD's Def Squad crew, which also included K-Solo and Redman, among others -- made such a wide breakthrough in 1992 with their debut album that their hit "They Want EFX" was even referenced in the lily-white teen serial Beverly Hills 90210. That Dead Serious could have that sort of broad impact and still retain its credibility within the underground hip-hop community says something about its appeal, ...

| | Main Source Breaking Atoms CD (1991)
Bar Exam songs
$9.55 Main Source's debut album, Breaking Atoms, is one of the quintessential cult classics in hip-hop history. Underappreciated compared to peers like A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, or even Brand Nubian, the album probably doesn't get wider acclaim because it was recorded for the ill-fated Wild Pitch label, and thus remained out of print for much of the time its reputation was spreading. Group focal point the Large Professor is a fine rapper, but the album's legend rests more on his production -- he debuts one of the most influential styles in hip-hop here, popularizing a number of now widely imitated techniques. Luckily, you don't have to know how to operate an SP-1200, or ...
| | Main Source F*CK What You Think CD (1994)
Bar Exam album
$9.75 Even if Main Source's lineup had remained the same for the follow-up to Breaking Atoms, the group would've had trouble following it up. That's not all the group had working against it. Most significantly, in a very gutsy move, K-Cut and Sir Scratch opted to keep Main Source running after the departure of Large Professor, easily their greatest asset as both an MC and a producer. They replaced him with the rougher-sounding Mikey D. and didn't return with F*ck What You Think until a full three years after Breaking Atoms impacted the hip-hop world. ...

| | Group Sounds: WCBS New York, Vol. 3 CD (1991)
Bar Exam music CDs
$12.95 The three-volume Group Sounds set continues Collectables' diligent re-shuffling and re-packaging of doo wop and R&B singles from the late '50s and early '60s. As with other Collectables sets like For Lovers Only, Jukebox Giants, and Back Seat Memories, the Group Sounds discs offer a decent combination of national hits and regional hits. Although they are enjoyable, they are hardly definitive; and they don't exactly cater to collectors or newcomers, instead falling into some middle ground between those two poles. Another problem is that each of these discs are skimpy, containing only 12 songs. The third volume includes the Flamingos' "I Only Have Eyes for You," the Channels' "That's My Desire," the Cadillacs' "Gloria," Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers' "I Promise to Remember," the Valentines' "The Woo Woo Train," and the Elegants' "Little Star." It must be noted that there are identical sets of the Group Sounds series that are dedicated to New York's WCBS and Philadelphia's WOGL; two oldies stations that have undoubtedly spun many of these songs several times over. ~ Andy Kellman
