| | Ruth Secondhand Dreaming CD Ruth Discography of CDs
Pop with a bit of bite, so it's not confused with the Britneys of the world. There are countless artists who could fit under this wide umbrella come the early 21st century, and the Battle Ground, WA-based quartet Ruth is certainly one such band. Although the band formed only two years before their full-length debut, 2007's Secondhand Dreaming, Ruth's sound is akin to such '90s pop/rockers as the Gin Blossoms and the Counting Crows (Ryan Adams also comes to mind at certain points). While there's certainly nothing groundbreaking here, there's no denying that Ruth knows how to pen very melodic pop. Tracks such as "One Foot in, One Foot Out" and the leadoff single, "Cross the Line," should have no problem attracting the attention of the American Idol crowd. But not all of Secondhand Dreaming is upbeat, as evidenced by such "down" ditties as "Figure You Out" and "Love Me Like You Do," while "Well with Soul" proves that, like most bands signed to the Tooth and Nail label, Ruth is Christian rock. ~ Greg Prato

| | Best Of The Rippingtons CD (1997)
Secondhand Dreaming music CDs
$8.45 Under the direction of Russ Freeman (equally skilled as a guitarist and as a keyboardist), the Rippingtons succeeded in combining jazz-influenced solos with light, funky rhythms and pop sensibilities. This particular CD has selections from eight of the group's GRP recordings, plus a pair of previously unreleased tracks ("Garden of Babylon" and "Sapphire Island") newly created for the sampler. With notable contributions from Freeman's longtime rhythm section and such saxophonists as Kenny G. (heard on "She Likes to Watch"), Brandon Fields, Eric Marienthal, Kirk Whalum, and Jeff Kashiwa, the CD acts as both a definitive sampling of the band's history and as an introduction to their accessible music. The results overall are typically lightweight but reasonably enjoyable, with some fiery moments giving variety to the high-quality pop music. ~ Scott Yanow

This second album by the former Mouseketeer turned nymphet heartthrob breaks little new ground compared to BABY ONE MORE TIME. The formula here remains, deliberately, the same: a candy-colored mix of Eurodance, hip-hop, and old-fashioned pop ballads. As before, the lyrics split the difference between "Baby, I love you so bad," as in "Can't Make You Love Me," and "Sorry, I think of you just as a friend," in the title song.
There are also some genuinely amusing moments, as in the conversational finale of "Oops!" in which Britney, after being informed that her boyfriend has recovered the jewel the old lady dropped into the ocean at the end of the TITANIC movie, replies "Oh, you shouldn't have." Most of the stuff here is, of course, transparently disposable pop, but to give Spears her due, she's a far, far better singer than any of the mall-rat pop stars of the late '80s.
