Aside from Bob Marley, no Jamaican artist has won as much international acclaim than the versatile Desmond Dekker. An iconic figure within both Jamaican and U.K. youth culture, he defined the "rudeboy" aesthetic for working-class mods enamored with the lawless imagery of Hollywood gangster films. Dekker was initially cast in the early '60s by producer Leslie Kong for a string of forgettable ska hits, but his star ascended during the rocksteady era at the close of the decade.

THIS IS CRUCIAL REGGAE collects his best-known songs, including key ska-era tracks such as the pre-rudeboy conversion anthem "Honor Your Mother and Father." However, it's the relaxed tempos of rocksteady that dominate this set. The songs contain soulful harmonies and the subtle influence of American R&B. Dekker even throws Latin flavors in the mix, as on the brass arrangements of "Jamaican Ska." But no Dekker collection would seem complete without his two most enduring classics: "Israelites" and "007 (Shanty Town)," already fixtures within popular culture. Few reggae songs capture one's imagination like these. Tackling tough political themes (like exodus and poverty), the bouncy, infectious melodies belie their serious content--vividly capturing the experiences of Jamaican's working class through sweet, timeless music.

Rollin'
Clayton Savage Rollin' CD  (2006)

This Is Crucial Reggae music CDs
CD $13.89
Clayton is a savage when it comes to making music and the music business.Description of the CS Sound:• Fresh beats like Timbaland, Pharrell, Dark Child and Lil John• The R&B appeal of Brian McKnight and Joe on the slow tip• The party appeal of Usher on the fast tip• The contemporary gospel appeal of Kirk Franklin• The influences of Prince, EWF, Rick James, and CameoIn an effort to prove himself to his fellow band mates, Clayton Savage produced and performed most of the instruments on his debut cassette, simply titled Clayton Savage. He flew to New York and New Jersey one week after not receiving return calls from the labels he’d sent his demos to and eventually ended up at the legendary Sugar Hills Records in Englewood, NJ.Clayton moved in as studio sessionist and producer and was introduced to the lineup, which included Grandmaster Mele Mel of the GM Flash Camp. Aside from writing and recording with many of the legends, including Kool Moe Dee, Sugar Hill Gang and Sequence, it was a cut from Clayton’s solo album titled “We Don't Work For Free” that caught Sylvia Robinson’s ear and she suggested that Mele Mel add a rap to the song. The song was moved from Clayton’s solo album and he became a member of the Furious Five. "We Don't Work For Free" became one of the first top 20 R&B/Rap songs.Clayton toured Europe and abroad with the Furious Five, developing a fan base of his own with his on-stage solos. He also performed many vocals and instruments on the rap group’s then current release. He’s even featured in two of their videos, including the single “Pump it Up”, a Treble Funk remake. In addition to his success with the Furious Five, Clayton was a soloist and dedicated to releasing his own album. Finding no support at Sugar Hill, he left and was signed by Gerry Griffith (who discovered Whitney Houston) to Capitol Manhattan Records and was the youngest male at the time to be given the reigns of producer independence. Clayton was the first male featured on the cover of Black Hair Magazine and can also be seen on the cover of Aretha Franklin’s Freeway of Love album. ...

It's Whateva
Federation It's Whateva CD  (2007)

This Is Crucial Reggae album
CD $12.49  Audio Samples
Nearly three full years after its 2004 debut, the Federation returned with IT'S WHATEVA, another round of hard-hitting San Francisco Bay Area hip-hop. Once again produced by mastermind Rick Rock, the trio of Doonie Baby, Goldie (not to be confused with the U.K. drum-and-bass artist), and Stressmatic prove that the West Coast "hyphy" style isn't going anywhere, and that the group can hold its own with its Dirty South crunk counterparts, particularly on the humorous "College Girl" and the R&B-tinged "My Rims." By the time Federation returned with their second album, It's Whateva, a long three years after the release of their debut, The Album (2004), the group's style of rap (i.e., hyphy) had become a full-fledged trend. Granted, hyphy was generally confined to the Bay Area of California, but the style had become popular, with such tastemakers as DJ Shadow championing it and such figureheads as E-40 taking it national. It's Whateva is consequently a celebration of hyphy and its newfound status; after all, Federation had been the ones who'd released a song titled "Hyphy" way back in 2003, and they work exclusively with producer Rick Rock, the style's chief architect. The album is long, clocking in at 21 tracks ...
