A historical recording, 1993's OTRA NOTA marked the salsa debut of Marc Anthony, long before he achieved the coveted crossover and became a mainstream pop star. In retrospect, the eight songs here sound tame in comparison to the harder-sounding salsa that Anthony would favor in his subsequent releases, TODO A SU TIEMPO and CONTRA LA CORRIENTE.
Aided by RMM's in-house producer, the talented pianist Sergio George, Anthony hand-picked the songs that would better allow him to showcase his distinctive vocal chords, which are powerful and delicate at the same time. A song he reportedly heard over the radio during a traffic jam in New York, Juan Gabriel's "Hasta Que Te Conoci," became a huge hit in Anthony's salsified version. Instantly upbeat and crackling with energy, ANTECEDENTE sees a further crystallization of Ruben Blades' reinvention of salsa as a format for the barrio narrative. The material lies for the most part in a realm of romance and nostalgia, and unlike other albums with Seis Del Solar, the keyboards have been set down and the horns picked back up for a more straight-ahead salsa feel.
"La Marea" and "Juana Mayo" are thick cuts of hard salsa, the latter a darkly poetic depiction of a prostitute's endless and anonymous nightwalking. "'Tas Caliente" goes on a joyride full of piquant rhythmic breaks as Ruben admonishes a muchacho to change his low-life ways "or one of these days you're gonna get it." Scatter is that rare beast among career-spanning compilations, a collection that both serves as an excellent introduction to the band's oeuvre, and packed with enough fine obscurities and new treats to make it equally essential for longtime fans. Following no particular chronological course, Scatter runs from the first releases up to the then-most-recent, sometimes in unexpected ways. "Mystery," from the debut EP release of ITN's post-punk guitar days, receives a radical sonic update and remix as "Mystere" to match more current ITN sounds, and does so with both power and drama. Other new remixes include an even lovelier version of Duality's "Belle Epoque," "Twins," and Sense's "Sixth Sense," while the rarities include "Epitaph," "Seraphic," and a remix of "Workcorps," all from long deleted compilations, and all quite good indeed. Tito Rojas achieved his greatest hour with this superior recording; Rojas' vocalizing becomes edgier, grittier, and uncompromisingly raw and these qualities are laid out with brutally swinging orchestrations. "Señora de Madrugada" is as danceable as salsa can get; "Quiero Ser Tuyo" (watch for Edgardo Morales' sassy timbales solo) and "También Nos Duele" (with Angel "Angie" Machado doing a trumpet solo) present Tito Rojas in a different dimension, a tough guy who can be romantic. "Enamoráme" and "He Chocado Con la Vida" are powerfully convincing, almost tailor-made to suit the vocalist's rabid style. Dazzlingly effective; no other Tito Rojas vehicle has worked to a better advantage for the singer. An absolute must-have. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr.
