Mozart - The Greatest Operas / Davis, Furtwangler, Et Al
$10.09 The 1952 NBC series Victory at Sea was one of the earliest network documentary series to capture the public's imagination in a serious way, and one of the more enduring offshoots was the music by Richard Rodgers, which was recorded by RCA-Victor in what ultimately became a series of four LPs. Rodgers was chosen by series producer Henry Salamon based on his being the "leading American composer of his day," a somewhat exalted (though understandable) judgement for a man who was most closely associated with the Broadway stage and Hollywood. The albums were popular, probably due in part to the fact that the music was accessible and unchallenging, and that it insinuated itself for months into the household of seemingly every American family that had someone fighting in World War II -- and that a lot of veterans owned stereo systems in the late '50s, and these recordings took full advantage of stereo's two-channel sound separation. As to the music itself, ...

$16.39 | | Charlie Marks Classic Christmas CD (2005)
Mozart - The Greatest Operas / Davis, Furtwangler, Et Al
$10.09 This album would provide a beautiful backdrop for any seasonal event. The music is well-crafted. The arrangements are creative, but remain true to the heart and soul of these familiar holiday favorites. Favorite moments include the precious bell choir on "O Little Town of Bethlehem," the exotic flutes on "We Three Kings of Orient Are," the alien intro on "While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks," the sweet but simple "Gentle Mary Laid Her Child" (the same tune as "Good King Wenceslas"), and the glorious trumpet fanfare on "Joy to the World."Classic Christmas is exactly that--holiday music that is absolutely classic for the season. Charlie Marks likes a challenge, and this fine album is the winning result.-Carol SwansonChristmasreviews.comI have been a fan of Mannheimer Christmas music for years. Well, this cd by Charlie Marks is absolutely wonderful. His unique arrangements of traditional Christian hymns is a splendid contribution. The amazing things is that the instrumental music is arranged in such a way that congregations can sing to it. I use it frequently to study by.-Pastor John Otis Corpus Christi, TexasThis cd has a masterful blend of various synthesized instruments that add great depth and feeling to well-known Christmas songs. The instruments are carefully incorporated to enhance the meaning of each song, and invoke a variety of moods. From softly twinkling stars over "O Little Town of Bethlehem" to camels moving through the desert in "We Three Kings of Orient Are" (By the far the best rendition of this song I've ever heard) to the trumpets bold proclamation in "Joy to the World", this cd brings new depth to old favorites. I would describe his work as "majestic Mannheimer" for those familiar with their style of music.-Connie Martinez Robstown, TexasPerfect CD for background music at Christmas parties. The tunes are familiar, but the arrangements original. Excellent addition to your CD collection.-Carrie Brownell Corvallis, OregonTwelve years ago, I began what I thought was a simple project to help a tiny congregation with hymn arrangements that exceeded what could be played on an old worn out Spinet. Brushing off the cobwebs of my own degree in music, I decided that the subject matter deserved a presentation that could stand alone, whether or not anyone was singing along. To this end, it was my self-imposedchallenge to present each instrument as realisticallyas possible, meaning that the notes sounded are within the ranges that are typically played. From thesoaring French horns to simple classical guitar arpeggios, the ...

Mozart - The Greatest Operas / Davis, Furtwangler, Et Al
$41.19 Get Ready, Here Come the '70s features 57 pop/rock hits of the era, by the original artists, encompassing bubblegum, country-rock, singer/songwriter, glam, disco, and soul. While it doesn't contain as many one-hit wonders as Rhino's massive Have a Nice Decade: The 70s Pop Culture Box, or the additional 20 tracks found on Barry Williams Presents: 70s Music Explosion, this three-disc set zooms in on immediately recognizable chart-toppers for anyone who grew up in that decade or is a fan of pop music in general. Unfortunately, these same songs have already been reissued ad nauseam for the past decade. Yes, Shout Factory does the usual admirable job with packaging, liner notes, and remastering, but you have to wonder if yet another box set of this type was really necessary. Probably not. ~ Al Campbell
