Pianist/singer Sunnyland Slim (1909-1995) was a major force in Chicago blues for over 50 years. A professional by the late '20s, he was based in Memphis for a time before moving to Chicago in 1939. A powerful pianist and an expressive singer, he recorded for many labels through the years, having his own company (Airway Records) in the 1970s. She Got a Thing Goin' On reissues the best selections from those dates. In addition to numbers that showcase Slim's vocals, he is heard backing singers Zora Young, Bonnie Lee, and Big Time Sarah, all of whom sound inspired by his presence. Teamed with top-notch musicians, the pianist plays with the energy of someone half his age. In addition, there are two selections from a 1979 date with Kansas City Red and Honeyboy Edwards that was released on this CD for the first time. Highly recommended as a fine retrospective from the later years of Sunnyland Slim. ~ Scott Yanow This album is a reissue of tracks produced and released by Sunnyland Slim on his Airway lable in the early '80s. Sunyland served as a mentor and promoter of Bonnie, Sara, and Zora, taking them on tours which gave them national exposure in the beginning of their professional careers. Remember the Bee Gees pre-"Jive Talkin" and Saturday Night Fever, when they were sweet, melancholy Beatles-sound likes? Thomas Ventiquattro II (aka Tom 24) sure does and proves it on his latest CD Horizon Eyes.

Tom 24 has been writing songs and performing for over 30 years, and yet Horizon Eyes retains a youthful exuberance that belies the man's years of experience. With a voice eerily similar to head Bee Gee Barry Gibb, Tom manages to echo their pop-folk lovelorn balladry with uncanny accuracy on songs like "Peaceful and Mine", "Guilty By Association", Hopeless and Helpless" and "Play Your Life". Elsewhere, as if to prove he's no one trick pony, he kicks things up a notch with "Love Lost", "Clever Endeavor" and "Half Alive", all songs that the likes of America or Little River Band would kill to get their mitts on.

Although the Latin accents of "Kick Your But Habits" are a tad over the top, Tom does manage to keep the album flowing along nicely. Horizon Eyes may be old fashioned in its composition style, outlook and sound but in this day and age of substance over content and few people being able to write a song properly anymore, this CD is welcome and worth seeking out.

"Horizon Eyes" then became the follow-up to the well-reviewed 2004 release, 'Twilight Blue Excursion." Studio producer, Dan Wills, again performs impressive background instrumental work, highlighting the vocals and guitars of Tom 24. The opening number, "Peaceful And Mine," sets the mellow tone for the next 14 easy-listening tracks. A mid-disc dose of comedy jumps out in a bossa nova beat with "Kick Your But Habits." ...
