Standard Screen; Soundtrack English As films such as MEAN STREETS have exposed the underbelly of Little Italy, Mike Kang's WEST 32ND is a gritty look at New York City's Koreatown. John Cho (HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE) plays John Kim, an ambitious lawyer who sees how taking the case of a young Korean murder suspect may be able to improve the image of his firm--and himself by extension. He meets the boy's sister Lila (Grace Park), and he's immediately drawn to the case. As he investigates the case, he goes deeper and deeper into the underworld of gangs and corruption.
With OLDBOY and THE HOST, Korean films have gained a foothold in U.S. cinemas, but Korean-American films have yet to do the same. Raised in Providence, Rhode Island, director-screenwriter Kang gives an interesting look at the lives of those straddling the space between Korea and America. Cho, who was previously so funny in the stoner comedy, moves seamlessly into this intense drama. He carries the film with his deft portrayal of a complex character. Park, who is best known for her role as a Cylon in the sci-fi series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, gets to stretch a bit in her role as the conflicted Lila. Coupled with small moments of humor, her flirtation with John gives the film a brief rest from the darkness. WEST 32ND harkens back to crime films such as DONNIE BRASCO and RESERVOIR DOGS where characters with the best of intentions get in over their heads as they spend time with the "bad guys."

$9.69 In Douglas Sirk's emotionally and visually extravagant final film IMITATION OF LIFE, a life's work of subverted melodrama and razor-sharp social commentary are brought to a resounding and baroque climax. In a role that closely resembles and perhaps parodies her own life, Lana Turner plays Lora Meredith, an aspiring actress and single mother who meets Annie Johnson (Juanita Moore), a black and similarly single and struggling mother. When they move in together, Annie assumes the role of domestic servant and the two ...

TESORO MIO, based on the true life story of Carlos Dietrich, a lowly bank clerk who embezzles a large amount of money from a local branch of Banco de Argentina, pays more attention to the crushing banality and petty jealousies of provincial Argentinean life than the actual crime. Gabriel Goity plays Dietrich with a heartbreaking mixture of cuckolded disgust and suburban ennui, muddling through ...

$9.65 Mike Myers spoofs the self-help industry with the creation of Guru Pitka, his first original character since Austin Powers. Orphaned at a young age, Maurice (Myers) studies with Guru Tugginmypuddha (Ben Kingsley) at an ashram in India where his classmate is a young Deepak Chopra. Pitka becomes a world-renowned guru in his own right, but despite his best efforts, he repeatedly comes in second to Chopra in the guru rankings. But his manager has a plan: the only difference between Pitka and Chopra is that the latter has appeared on THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW. Pitka's key to an Oprah show appearance is Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco), star player of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. Estranged from his wife, Prudence (Meagan Good), who has started dating French-Canadian Jacques "Le Coq" Grande (Justin Timberlake), Roanoke's game has suffered terribly, putting his team's bid for the playoffs and the Stanley Cup in jeopardy. If Pitka can reunite the estranged couple in time for Roanoke to help win the Stanley Cup, ...
| | Vicky Cristina Barcelona DVD (2008) Widescreen
West 32ND video
$14.99 From watching the trailer for VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA, one might never have guessed that it was actually an offering from prolific auteur Woody Allen. There's no New York, no sight of Allen, and his trademark wit was nowhere to be seen. But this film--with its talented cast, sharp dialogue, and excellent use of gorgeous locations--marks Allen's best comic work since 1994's BULLETS OVER BROADWAY. Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) are American best friends who have the luck of spending several summer months in the Spanish city of the title. Though the pair is inseparable, they clash over love: Vicky is engaged to the trustworthy Doug (Chris Messina), while Cristina is forever in search of new experiences and passions. When a fiery Spanish painter named Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) proposes that the three fly off to Oviedo for the weekend with the goal of making love, the women are divided, but they both eventually agree to the trip. After unexpected events in Oviedo, they return to Barcelona where Juan Antonio's obsessive ex-wife (Pénélope Cruz) enters the picture.
As the rule-bound Vicky, Hall--who has been largely unknown to American audiences before this film--gives a wonderfully witty performance that keeps pace with her more famous costars. Those who have only seen Bardem in his Oscar-winning role as the cold ...
