$14.39 This delightful cinematic adaptation of the 1945 classic by John Steinbeck stars Nick Nolte and Debra Winger as a carelessly romantic couple who experience the impoverished life of vagabonds. $13.55 Randall Miller's NOBEL SON is an ultra-stylized comic thriller with so many twists it could make David Mamet blush. The film opens at the midway point for a quick jolt of violence, then backs up and tells the story from the very beginning. Barkley Michaelsen (Bryan Greenberg) is a college student living under the shadow of his monstrous, arrogant father, Eli (Alan Rickman), who has just been awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry. When not being a genius, Eli reveals himself to be a truly miserable man who cheats on his beautiful wife, Sarah (Mary Steenburgen). As for Barkley, on the night that he goes home with a sultry poet named City Hall (Eliza Dushku), his life takes an unexpected turn for the dangerous. The arrival of a mysterious figure named Thaddeus James (Shawn Hatosy) confirms his troubled situation. At this point, the lies, double crosses, and backstabs begin to multiply at an alarming rate.
NOBEL SON comes off like a glossy, revved-up hybrid between Quentin Tarantino and torture porn. Miller and Jody Savin fill their script with as many comic elements as they do noir-esque twists and moments of grotesque violence. Helping to bring things to fuller life is the impressive cast--most notably Hatosy, who lends a welcome measure of depth to ...

Director Josée Dayan, screenwriter Didier Decoin (JAKOB THE LIAR), and star Gérard Depardieu had previously collaborated on an adaptation of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO and a biopic on BALZAC. They combined their talents again for this fine version of Victor Hugo's classic novel. LES MISÉRABLES has been adapted for the screen many times but rarely with such fidelity to the novel. Jean Valjean (Depardieu) is imprisoned at a young age for stealing bread. In prison, the young man hardens into bitterness under the watchful, unforgiving eye of Javert (John Malkovich), a lawman who doesn't believe in redemption. Javert continues to hound Valjean, even after the convict leaves prison and changes his ways. Valjean devotes his life to protecting the orphaned daughter of a young woman whose life he inadvertently helped destroy. This adaptation is appropriately down and dirty, effectively portraying the dehumanizing grimness of ...

Xavier Beauvois's ACCORDING TO MATTHIEU paints a sobering, subtly harrowing portrait of a young man who finds himself unable to control or contain his quickly unraveling life. Matthieu (Benoit Magimel), a Normandy native, is employed at the same factory as his father and older brother. On his brother's wedding day, he discovers that his father has been fired for smoking a cigarette on the factory's premises. Disgusted that no one will take a stand for his father, Matthieu finds himself alone and discouraged. Shortly after, his despondent father is hit by a car and killed. Matthieu, stunned and horrified, blames the death on the evil company that triggered his depression. Committed to exacting revenge, Matthieu decides to seduce the factory owner's wife, Claire (Nathalie Baye), humiliating the powerful businessman in the process. What he doesn't realize is that this action only sparks a new series of greater confusions, to the point where Matthieu begins to question all of his previous beliefs. He must dig within himself to find the strength to pull his life back together, even when everything around him seems ...
