Personnel: Phil Woods (saxophone); Brian Lynch (trumpet); Bill Charlap (piano); Bill Goodwin (drums). Audio Mixer: Paul Wickliffe. Liner Note Author: Ted Panken. Recording information: Charlestown Road Studios, Hampton, NJ (01/21/2007/01/22/2007). Arrangers: Phil Woods; Brian Lynch. The Phil Woods Quintet has long been famous for being the perfect outlet for the veteran altoist. In addition to bebop standards, the group usually includes inventive originals and lots of interplay between the five notable musicians, which in recent times has included trumpeter Brian Lynch and pianist Bill Charlap in addition to original members bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. The American's Songbook II, like its predecessor, is a bit different in that all ten songs are standards from American popular music and usually shows rather than originating in the jazz world. Only "Careless" is a little obscure. The arrangements, often by Lynch, modernize the songs a bit while retaining their melodies and feel. There is some particularly beautiful playing along the way from Woods and, although this is not the most heated or intense recording by his group, it is quite pleasing, respectful and full of subtle adventures. ~ Scott Yanow

American's Songbook II
$13.49 This session recorded in 2004 features alto sax great Phil Woods and his Little Big Band performing memorable jazz songs written by legendary composer/arranger Quincy Jones. Phil is joined by 8 other jazz musicians including Bill Charlap on piano and Brian Lynch on trumpet:***************"As this marvelous record so eloquently bears out, Phil Woods today is at the very top of his form-and that, my friends, is a claim based on nearly fifty years (help!) of listening to this extraordinary artist, live and on record. Here Phil pays homage to another dear friend, happily very much alive, and Phil's junior by about 16 months, the one and only Quincy Jones. The title is derived from a l956 LP-Quincy's first as a leader-called "This Is How I Feel About Jazz". This is not the place for even a brief resume of Q.'s amazing career; suffice ...
