Sunday Soul Selection album
$11.65 A San Francisco-based smooth R&B act with roots in Philadelphia soul, Maze (usually billed as Maze featuring Frankie Beverly) never managed to break with a larger mainstream audience during their late-`70s to early `80s peak, but nevertheless garnered a devoted following in urban radio as one of ...

Sunday Soul Selection music CDs
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
Jackson's domination of the world record market continued following Thriller, although by comparison it was an almighty flop with only 12 million sales. As Pink Floyd and Dire Straits have proved, one album can go completely sales haywire without necessarily being any better. The title track and the gorgeous "Man In The Mirror" were substantial hits, but quality material such as "Dirty Diana" and "Liberian Girl" bolster a strong album. Jackson ...

| | Royce Da 59 Street Hop CD (2009)
Sunday Soul Selection CD music
$11.49 In pre-release interviews, Royce da 5'9" laid out a perfect description of his style: a Detroit kid brought up on Nas whose head was sent spinning once Eminem came around. Three years in the making--twelve months in prison for a DUI being part of the problem--STREET HOP often has a solid foundation that's absolutely classic in feel but also features those quirky, sick-o rhymes that are distinctly post-Shady. "I mix a between Chris Brown and Chris Jericho/Where's your daughter?" is an unsettling bit from the freaky track "Street Hop 2010" which goes on to reference Marlon Brando's Apache friend picking up his Oscar right before rattling off some psycho-babble about "syphilis nun chucks" and other bizarre whatnot. Hard to believe the convincing R&B stunner "Thing for Your Girlfriend" could follow with all its radio-friendly polish while elsewhere "New Money" brings reminders of Roc-A-Fella's heyday with its bright and grand Streetrunner production. The minimal "Soldier" features an innovative Frequency beat with a bit of Rick Rubin-styled crunch which Royce takes in another direction, going the Kool Keith route and hurling insults like "Your mama got a glass eye/With a fish in it." "The Warriors" takes the album down a dark alley with some help from Royce's group Slaughterhouse and when Trick ...
| | Cal Tjader Plays Harold Arlen/West Side Story CD (2002)
Sunday Soul Selection music CDs
$9.59 Two Tjader albums recorded in 1960, Cal Tjader Plays Harold Arlen and West Side Story, are combined on one CD on this 2002 reissue. Using two separate backup trios on Cal Tjader Plays Harold Arlen, Tjader took on 11 Harold Arlen songs (actually all songs that he co-wrote) for these two days of mid-1960 sessions, with "Over the Rainbow" and "Blues in the Night" being the most well known of those. On the first six tracks, he's backed by Buddy Motsinger on piano, Al McKibbon on bass, and Willie Bobo on drums. On the other five, Motsinger remains while bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Johnny Rae become the rhythm section; a string section on harp augments these five tracks as well. Although these are well-crafted interpretations, the constant ballad tempos and languorous mood get sluggish taken one after the other. Clare Fischer's tense orchestral arrangements actually add a bit of wakeup spice to the latter part of the program, even as they heighten the sentimentality factor in some respects. West Side Story also employs orchestral Fischer arrangements, this time the whole way through. It's not the best envisioning of the classic musical, but it's OK. Tjader's vibes seem more appropriate for some tracks -- the jazzier ...
| | Best Of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth: Good Life CD (2003)
Sunday Soul Selection songs
$9.09 Recorded between 1991 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Charlie Braxton.
A hip-hop duo seemingly destined for success, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth never broke through into the rap mainstream, despite plenty of charting singles and a classic LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother. Rhino's 2003 compilation reveals the pair's career as one of the finest in hip-hop, no less impressive for only releasing two full-length albums. Both Mecca and the Soul Brother and its hotly hyped follow-up, The Main Ingredient, benefited from a lot of quality material (so much, in fact, that a wiser act may have saved some for a third album). Nevertheless, the duo's best singles -- "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," "Straighten It Out," "Lots of Lovin" -- were hard but intelligent, delivered with tight raps from C.L. Smooth over breezily swinging productions from Pete Rock, one of hip-hop's best trackmasters. Clever compiling makes this disc even more impressive: Included are three tracks from their debut EP, All Souled Out, as well as contributions to the soundtracks for Poetic Justice and Menace II Society. ~ John Bush
