Ned Spurlock is a world renowned hammer dulcimer builder and player. The instruments he builds are played with small hammers and emit a tone that is similar to a piano. It is an ancient instrument that is mentioned in the Bible in the book of Daniel, and is in fact, the forerunner of the piano. Starting in his home, garage wood shop, he built his first instrument in 1988, then began going to festivals and shows, playing the instrument and demonstrating its beautiful sounds. Ned’s music is unique because he is using an instrument that is usually associated with folk music, in an orchestral setting. His music is set in lush arrangements accompanied by violins, violas, cellos, flutes, clarinet, saxophone, French horns, oboe, English horn, trumpets, trombones, and harp. The musicians who work with Ned are members of the Dallas and Fort Worth Texas Symphonies and are all accomplished musicians in their own right. Ned’s recordings are played on radio stations all over the world and are sold in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Goushes can be loosely called "variations" within a single compositional system [dastgah] in Persian traditional music. But it is much more complex than that. Goushes have more to do with recalling possibilities demanded by the temporal understanding of the music at hand than a set way of interpretation. So, to call the "Western" guest a goushe may sound sacrilegious to some purists. But given that goushe has many interpretations, let me the liberty to interpret it as more linguistically as "witness", rather than "corner", as it is usually done. Later you will see that this "witness" will get involved with equal stature. Goushe was the person who would sit in one of the several rooms surrounding a traditional residential entry hall in Iran. The person would listen to the business or legal conversations of his master and his guests and be a "witness" or a reminder. Nat Francis AKA JJ Sparks was born Gladstone Alexander Wilberforce Oliphant in Kingston, Jamaica . He was born to a family who loved music and were gifted to sing. Coming from a family with strict religious beliefs many of them sang in Church choirs others including ''Junior'' as known by close family and friends, went on to to take their creative talents onto a wider audience, these other family members included Cecil Campbel, Jimmy Tucker and Sharon Tucker.
