On 2007's THE FRAGILE ARMY, the many members of the Polyphonic Spree trade in their colorful robes for black military-inspired uniforms, effectively altering their collective look from JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR to Pink Floyd's THE WALL. Those expecting a radical sonic shift are met halfway: while frontman Tim De Laughter and company have crafted a denser and moodier album than past Spree outings, ARMY is far from dark, a point best illustrated by the restless "Get Up and Go," which boasts an edgier guitar-and-piano-heavy approach that nonetheless features the Texan group's signature symphonic, pomp-and-circumstance singalongs. And anyone worried about a dearth of trilling flute lines and soaring melodies will be warmly reassured by the jubilant "Running Away," which proves that the Spree may change, but they're still raising their hands to the sky.
The new album The Fragile Army, is an exuberant and passionate explosion that finds the legendary 20 piece symphonic rock group joyfully raging against the dying of the light with newfound zeal. This set includes the CD and a DVD plus a patch.Spin (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he band tests the limits of its quasi-religious, happy-all-the-time ethos with songs that surprisingly explore the range of human emotion." Uncut (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[G]utsier than their previous angelic hippie singalongs, with hints of Bowie's glam era peeping through the billowing curtains of harmonies..." Magnet (p.106) - "The soaring 'Running Away' and the delicate 'We Crawl' are textbook shiny, hopeful Spree. The band is just giving it to us straighter than before." CMJ (p.43) - "Tracks like 'Running Away' still maintain a certain level of spiritual uplift, but they do so with hummable hooks and tasteful brevity.....ARMY is Spree's first bull's eye." | | Johnny Otis Cold Shot! CDs (1969)
Fragile Army songs
$11.15 Though Otis' 1969 album wasn't much different from the straightforward R&B he'd been doing for years, it did have some updated rock, soul, and funk influences, due in large part to the presence of his teenage guitarist son, Shuggie Otis. The band is tight and the vocals OK, but it's on the ordinary side as far as such music goes, even if the stew of blues, soul, and funk is reasonably solid. Well, it's not wholly ordinary: "The Signifyin' Monkey Part 1" has some daringly profane language for 1969, with the word "motherf*cker" cropping up in the very first line and a drawling spoken delivery that anticipated rap. This track's approach, ...

| | Bob Frank World Without End CD (2006)
Fragile Army CD music
$14.69 Bob Frank renewed his musical career in 2001 with A Little Gest of Robin Hood, a modern adaptation of an epic poem about the famous outlaw, released on his own Bowstring Records label. Frank has put out several records since, and with World Without End he returns to historical work and accounts of criminal activity, this time of a less heroic sort. Alternating vocals with John Murry, who also co-wrote all the songs, Frank sings of a series of murders, murderers, and victims. Most or all of them seem to be real people from the 18th to the 20th century, and they range from lynched African-Americans ("Jesse Washington, 1916") to adulterous women bricked up in chimneys ("Madeline, 1796"). Murry has a more slurred and slippery voice, unlike the more distinctly spoken Frank, making his songs all the more mysterious as his singing sometimes melds with the musical arrangements, which often include a droning electric guitar. Keeping to the folk tradition of the murder ballad even on these newly written songs, the singer/songwriters offer few if any excuses for the violent behavior of their characters. "Nobody knows why Bubba Rose killed his boss," Frank sings in "Bubba Rose, 1961." But he did, and Frank goes on to tell us how. One may think of the album as a kind of musical version of a Quentin Tarantino movie, and there may be stories here that he and other filmmakers could adapt. For Frank and Murry, the songs represent the renewal of folk music's darkest genre. ~ William Ruhlmann
"The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past." William Faulkner. "Secret crime of passion. Body buried in the garden where the roses never grow. Blood curse from long gone yesterdays — doomed sinner homeless, even in death.Outlaws, murderers, their phantoms wander searching for impossible redemption.Dare the darkness. Hear the tormented cry of soul beyond mercy. The lost cry out in song. Cold as an assassin's blade. Burning with the heat of a pistol's breath. Dark and deep as the grave. This recording is timeless as death. It will haunt your dreams and follow you down the shadow-filled street just out of sight." — Jim Dickinson"At first glance "World Without End," a new CD release by Bob Frank and John Murry, appears to be a Halloween release. You can take my word, it's too damned scary for any of that. This ain't for kids. It's a musical celebration of death, violence and mayhem that's a trick and a treat straight from the gates of Hell – like nothing that's ever come before it – and has nothing to do with rubber masks and evening porch candy, folks. This is genuine skin crawling material that harkens back to another era – and a dark epic it is. It's vile, musty stuff sung from the crypt by victims of lynchings, stake burnings and suicides that even big kids, if they're fragile of spirit, ought not be listening to unsupervised. Until Quentin Tarantino turns ...

Fragile Army album
$50.05 TRICK OF THE TAIL was Genesis' first LP after the departure of Peter Gabriel.
This was Genesis' first album following the departure of vocalist Peter Gabriel. After ascending the heights of conceptual progressive rock on the preceding THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY, Genesis was left between a rock and a hard place, trying to define its identity anew. With the odds against them they put in a fine showing on TRICK OF THE TAIL. The general musical mode is similar to that of LAMB--longish songs with well developed structures and arrangements and a straighter rock feel than the band's early work.
Lyrically, the band didn't ...
