Ever since she won the first-ever AMERICAN IDOL reality-TV competition, Kelly Clarkson has tried to distance herself from the very institution that brought her fame. More so than any PR move or interview sound bite, however, it's Clarkson's third full-length that may represent her biggest push for career and artistic control. MY December kicks off with the album's first single, "Never Again," and with the opening line "I hope the ring you gave to her/turns her finger green," Clarkson begins one of the most ornery pop albums ever written with the charts in mind (and things don't let up from there).
While Clarkson is no Trent Reznor, song after song here resonates with the disillusionment, bitterness, and vulnerability that come from spent relationships, romantic or otherwise. Her crack studio band provides rock punch, and there is a plethora of studio tricks that give the album an extra layer of sonic muscle, enhancing its angsty vibe. MY December is a curious record, and the presence of punk elder statesmen Mike Watt on bass only makes the proceedings that much more peculiar. While there's no one track that strikes gold quite like her bubblegum anthem "Since U Been Gone," MY December is certainly Clarkson's most ambitious and challenging album to date.

Spin (p.94) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Clarkson's bleacher-reaching vocals and irrepressible pluck are hard to dislike..." Entertainment Weekly (p.135) - "Clarkson's most vulnerable moments are accomplished and affecting -- from the frisky pleadings of 'Can I Have a Kiss' to the near-suicidal despair of 'Irvine'." -- Grade: B+ My December Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Fantastic!!!!!!!! Very Good!!!! Kelly Clarkson is already an amazing artist, and her previous albums were great! But this cd totally rocks! It's different from the others, but in a good way! LOL My fav is definately Never Again! But I really like all of the songs on the entire cd! Any Kelly fan needs to have this cd! I'm a dancer, so I love to rock out and dance to this cd! GOOD JOB Kelly! Submitted by Randi (Myrtle Creek, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 4 found this helpful.
Good, but not great The songs I hate on this album I hate with a passion, however the ones I love are ones I adore! It's really one way or the other here.
Songs I love: "Sober", "Don't Waste Your Time", "Maybe", "How I Feel" and "Can I Have a Kiss?" These are absolutely brilliant with some lyrics that stick with you and have meaning.
Songs that aren't so great: "Be Still" (dull, repeatitive with no real purpose behind it), "Yeah" (this song GRATES my nerves!), "Judas" (has potential, but the music and the lyrics aren't compatible), "Hole" (lyrics are *too* simple). Submitted by Kat (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

brave girl = KELLY CLARKSON okay lets compare my december to breakaway, my december focused on emotions and lyrics while breakaway focused on melody (which is definitely done by producers who wants to make some money). as a fan, i am definitely more on the emotions and lyrics because kelly did a great job on this self-penned album. and it is very dissapointing that this hannah montana beat her on sales, hannah is crap. so kelly deserves an applause for this album. here's my list of probable singles for the album: 1. never again 2. sober 3. judas 4. haunted 5. chivas (let her rerecord it with additional instruments). kudos to kelly, unlike other artists who rapidly having crap albums just to get some hit songs (like gwen stefani, RIHANNA, etc.) Submitted by derfcire (new york) Was This Review Helpful? My December
$9.69 With 2003's THANKFUL, Kelly Clarkson proved that her AMERICAN IDOL win was no fluke by putting out a solid album of gospel-influenced R&B performed with the panache of a seasoned veteran. In late 2004, the Texas native delivered on the promise of her sophomore record's title, BREAKAWAY, by diving headfirst into alternative-rock-flavored pop of the Avril Lavigne/Michelle Branch variety. Though there are still a few R&B-inspired moments here ("Because of You" is a soulful, string-laced ballad in the best Mariah Carey tradition), most of the album has a much harder edge than fans of THANKFUL would likely expect. On this, his third release, he features the instrument in a double tracked recording with his regular guitar, the result producing the sound of an intuitive duo or a multifingered virtuoso soloist.
