Michael Hearst is one half of One Ring Zero, a band that made a name for itself among literati by releasing an album with lyrics solicited from some of America's best writers. SONGS FOR ICE CREAM TRUCKS is Hearst's first solo outing, and makes good on its title by offering up a collection of tracks tailor-made for--yes--ice cream trucks. With a couple of exceptions, the album is entirely instrumental, and the tunes are bright, chipper ditties played on accordion and lo-rent synth. The disc has its share of charm, but the most remarkable thing about it is its realism: this music really could blast from ice cream truck speakers, evoking all the nostalgia of a summer afternoon and a soft-serve cone.
Personnel: Michael Marcus Hearst (bass guitar).

Songs For Ice Cream Trucks
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

$10.95 British director Andrew Douglas was so taken with Jim White's 1997 Southern gothic road record Wrong-Eyed Jesus that he decided to make a movie about the Deep South with White leading the charge in an old Chevy Impala. Dreamlike, spooky, and often funny, Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus is a series of collages and testimonies on everything from Pentecostal churches to old juke joints with music from ...

| | Hentchmen Hentch Forth Five CD (2007)
Songs For Ice Cream Trucks
$13.09 The Hentchmen have been playing raw, revved-up garage rock in Detroit long before that was considered a shrewd career move, and more than a few musicians have passed through the group's ranks since it started playing in 1992. One of them was Jack White, who played bass and guitar with the band for a spell in 1998, after his stints in Goober & the Peas and Two-Star Tabernacle but before the White Stripes cut their first album. The Hentchmen recorded a vinyl-only album during White's tenure with the group and, nearly a decade after the fact, Hentch Forth Five has been resurrected on compact disc. Rabid White Stripes fans looking for glimpses of their hero's creative input on this album will be somewhat disappointed -- while his Jimmy Page-influenced guitar chordings pop up briefly on two songs, most of the time White is just playing bass, and this is very much in the same vein as other Hentchmen albums of the period, such as Broad Appeal and Motorvatin'. But saying Hentch Forth Five sounds like the Hentchmen also means the album is lots of fun and rocks with unpretentious glee; "Automatic" will fill up your dancefloor in no time flat, "Me and My Monotone" lifts the key riff from "Roadrunner" and knows just what to do with it, and "Little No More" and "Club Wagon" burn rubber as they rocket toward their respective finish lines. The songs are hooky and rave up with style, Johnny Szymanski's Farfisa organ lines are invariably inspired, Tim ...
