In this gritty, high-tension crime thriller Chris 'Slapshot' Pratt (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), whose once-bright future has been dimmed by a sever head injury, falls prey to a con man, who dupes him into robbing the bank where he's night janitor. Filled with heart-pounding action, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and a twist you'll never see coming, this film will grip you and never let go. Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode, and Isla Fisher costars. Extras include making-of featurette, behind the mind of Chris Pratt, and audio commentary with writer/director Scott Frank and director of photography Alar Kivilo. Equal parts psychological drama and heist movie, this film from screenwriter Scott Frank is a smart first feature with a strong cast. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Chris Pratt, a young man whose life changes after a car accident. Though Chris survived, he's not the cocky high school athlete everyone remembers. Instead, a head injury leaves him with memory loss and the need to write everything down in a notebook. After leaving his late-night job as a bank janitor for the evening, Chris meets Gary (Matthew Goode) and Luvlee (Isla Fisher, WEDDING CRASHERS) at a neighborhood bar. Though they initially seem genuine, Gary reveals his intentions to rob the bank where Chris works. Eager for friendship and a return to the person he used to be, Chris is quickly in over his head.
After starring in THIRD ROCK FROM THE SUN, Gordon-Levitt hasn't gone the typical route of a 20-something actor. There isn't a single mainstream film in his post-sitcom filmography, and he has chosen smart indie fare such as BRICK and MYSTERIOUS SKIN. Though THE LOOKOUT is a larger project, it gives him the chance to shine. Jeff Daniels (THE SQUID AND THE WHALE) adds depth and wry humor with his portrayal of Lewis, Chris's blind roommate. British actor Goode trades in the good-guy roles in CHASING LIBERTY and MATCH POINT for this decidedly darker part. Though THE LOOKOUT lacks the style and humor of Frank's previous screenwriting work in OUT OF SIGHT and GET SHORTY, it's a well-acted film that is worth seeking out. Theatrical Release: March 30, 2007 Lookout Reviews: 4 stars out of 5 -- "Outwardly calm and inwardly broiling, BRICK star Gordon-Levitt is wholly fine as the troubled soul....A polished debut that would make Elmore Leonard proud."-- Neil Smith, Total Film 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he characters are intriguingly off-centre....[Gordon-Levitt delivers] a typically edgy turn."-- Alan Morrison, Empire 3 stars out of 5 -- "THE LOOKOUT is an engrossing character-driven thriller, propelled by the excellent performance of Levitt..."-- Nikki Baughan, Ultimate DVD "The real richness of the film lies in its ambiguity and attention to detail. The characters may seem like archetypes, but we are never quite sure what drives them."-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound "[With] salty language, caper tension and heartfelt drama, it's calculated to please....And please it does."-- John P. McCarthy, Box Office 3 stars out of 4 -- "[T]he movie belongs to Gordon-Levitt; putting across powerful impulses of shame and anger from behind a veil of blankness and befuddlement..."-- Glenn Kenny, Premiere 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[A] haunting and hypnotic film that transcends pulp by creating characters that get under your skin."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "Mr. Goode, with his mix of intelligence, cruelty and self-loathing, is both repugnant and fascinating....Most impressive of all is Mr. Gordon-Levitt..."-- Matt Zoller Seitz, New York Times "The spirit of Hitchcock returns triumphantly in THE LOOKOUT....The most gripping suspense film of recent years because it makes us care about the people caught up in a life-or-death adventure."-- Stephen Farber, Movieline's Hollywood Life Lookout | List Price | $34.99 (You save $4.50) | | Studio | Buena Vista Home Entertainment | | Orig Year | 2007 | | All Time Sales Rank | 67093 | | CD Universe Part number | 7446479 | | Catalog number | 05441000 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Aug 14, 2007 | | Rating | R (MPAA) | | Rating Reason | R for language, some violence, and sexual content. | | Running Time | 99 Minutes | | Movie Details | Color |
Lookout Movie Review Start at the End I saw it coming...but Chris 'slapshot' pratt didn't see it coming! This weaving story is great of friends, family and foes has one feeling chilled (in addition to the winter scenes) through most of the movie BUT at the end it thaws to a settling conclusion. The care of several individuals balance the seduction of others in the paradoxes of 'slapshots' life.
We all need to start at the end to figure most things in life and illustrationISM and BAMmGRAPHICS notated in his little notebook that THE LOOKOUT is (not to agree with Richard Roper, saying it was a Masterpiece, but) a 'GoodPiece' of film.
Jeff Daniels is a convincing Visually Challenged person. 'Wirty dord's and violence pepper the movie - definately BIG R rated. Submitted by bamm (Eugene, Oregon U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 5 of 5 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.
Amazing! Scott Frank writes and directs a smart thoughtful action, charactor study, film.
Joseph Gorden-Levitt delivers an incredible performance. He's the messed up kid from a bad car crash thats left him unable to remember just about everything. Anyway this is a topnotch crime thriller also. With bad guy Gary*Mattew Goode*as the slick evil one. And of course Jeff Daniels as the blind dude just about steals the show.
This film slipped under the radar.
But watch it and enjoy.
My girlfriend yelled at the sceen at one point towards the end...!!!So its also a chick flick...with class.

$23.39 It's always been said that a video game cannot be successfully adapted into a film. With SILENT HILL, director Christophe Gans (BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF) and screenwriter Roger Avary (KILLING ZOE) have the benefit of the atmospheric and often terrifying game series of the same name. With a budget reportedly in excess of $50 million, they wisely eschew dense plot in favor of a kaleidoscopic nightmare--culled from several volumes of the game series--designed to give horror fans what they crave. ...

$30.49 British director Christopher Nolan's (BATMAN BEGINS) eclectic resume gains another interesting entry with THE PRESTIGE. The basic plot, which concerns the rivalry between two magicians in early 20th-century London, closely resembles a fellow 2006 movie--Edward Norton's THE ILLUSIONIST--and the two films are sure to be closely compared. In Nolan's film, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale bring the characters of Robert Angier and Alfred Bordon to life. Robert and Alfred were young magician apprentices together, but became bitter rivals ...

$22.75 Opening with spectacular aerial shots of a beautiful, mountainous landscape, Stanley Kubrick's horror classic THE SHINING sucks the viewer into his frightening tale with quiet, relaxing visuals--but the ominous soundtrack warns that all is not right at the gorgeous Overlook Hotel. Based on Stephen King's best-selling novel, the film stars Jack Nicholson at his eyebrow-raising best in his portrayal of Jack Torrance, a Vermont schoolteacher working at the Overlook as a winter caretaker. The glorious early-20th century resort only operates in warm weather because the snowy ...
