Dean Martin songs
$63.49 (MP3 Available for Download) Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary scatting. The main exception is the centerpiece track, a nine-minute take on the Duke Ellington standard "Take the A Train," that gives Fitzgerald ample room to stretch out vocally. Although fans of her scat work might be somewhat disappointed by this mainstream set, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD serves to remind just how gifted a stylist Fitzgerald was in the pop genre as well.
Liner Note Authors: Harry Weinger; Richard Seidel.
Photographer: Chuck Stewart.
Personnel: Herb Ellis (guitar); Lou Levy (piano); Gus Johnson, Stan Levey (drums).

| | Robert Plant Raising Sand CD (2007)
Dean Martin album
$14.69 Those who find the pairing of '70s rock god Robert Plant with contemporary bluegrass queen Alison Krauss unlikely have probably not been paying attention to Plant's latter-day work, which is full of intimate, acoustic-flavored balladry. While the organic-sounding, low-key Plant/Krauss collaboration, RAISING SAND, is a far cry from Led Zeppelin's stadium rock, it offers up some hauntingly moody textures that should appeal to "Battle of Evermore" admirers.
Consisting mostly of sagely chosen cover tunes, the album finds Plant and Krauss bringing their warm-but-eerie harmonies to everything from Townes Van Zandt's nihilistic folk poetry ("Nothin'") to the crumbled beauty of latter-day Tom Waits ("Trampled Rose"). Determined not to rest ...
| | Neil Diamond Tap Root Manuscript CD (1970)
Dean Martin CD music
$6.49 (MP3 Available for Download) Half a straight-ahead pop album and half an exotic song cycle centered on a musical portrait of Africa, TAP ROOT MANUSCRIPT provides prime examples both of Neil Diamond's superlative way with a pop song in the classic "Cracklin' Rosie," and of his ambitious artistic leanings in most of the album's second half. Blending African rhythms and Christian imagery ...
| | Ella Fitzgerald Ella In Rome: The Birthday Concert CD (1958)
Dean Martin MP3 Album
$13.29 (MP3 Available for Download) Recorded on April 25, 1958, Ella Fitzgerald's 40th birthday, ELLA IN ROME finds one of the best jazz singers in history at the peak of her powers and not yet even halfway through her long and illustrious career. Norman Granz, head of Verve and Fitzgerald's producer, gives a flowery introduction that Fitzgerald goes on to justify. The opening "St Louis Blues," with an extended, intricate scat solo, is simply transcendent, and the ballads, like a slinky version of Duke Ellington's "Just Squeeze Me (But Please Don't Tease Me)," are stunning. The hour-long program also features a small-combo set with the always-amazing Oscar Peterson Quartet and a salute to Louis Armstrong, with whom Fitzgerald had recently recorded three ...
| | Madeleine Peyroux Careless Love CD (2004)
Dean Martin music CDs
$14.49 Madeleine Peyroux's unique blend of jazz and pop was first unveiled on 1996's DREAMLAND, where she sounded like a postmodern heir to the smoky-voiced tradition that ran down from Billie Holiday through the likes of Karen Dalton and Judy Roderick. Though Peyroux made a splash with her debut, she quickly dropped out of the music scene, not to appear again until eight years later with the long-overdue follow-up, CARELESS LOVE.
Here, Peyroux tackles material from a variety of sources; some songs were written expressly for her by such contemporary songsmiths as Jesse Harris (who penned Norah Jones's breakthrough hit, "Don't Know Why"). Perhaps most striking, though, are her interpretations of older compositions. Peyroux redefines the darkly yearning Leonard Cohen tune "Dance Me to the End of Love" as a sultry invitation rather than a heart-on-the-sleeve plea. Her lighter-than-air stroll through the clouds of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" has a graceful ease that puts the song's many previous cover versions to shame. Throughout CARELESS LOVE, Peyroux--with highly sympathetic production from Joni Mitchell right-hand-man Larry Klein--proves fully up to the task of redefining the role of torch singer for the careworn 21st century.

| | Joe Williams' Finest Hour CD (2001)
Dean Martin album
$12.65 (MP3 Available for Download) This is basically the budget version of the more comprehensive Every Day: The Best of the Verve Years anthology. While Verve could have easily compiled a better 60 minutes by sticking to Williams' '50s recordings with Count Basie, Joe Williams' Finest Hour shoots for the broader picture, from Williams' pre-Basie big-band work from the late '40s to his swingin'-senior-citizen days of the '80s and '90s. (Still, this is not exactly a retrospective, as there's a 30-year gap between Williams' last Verve session with Basie and the next record he cut for the label, 1987's Every Night). Overall, Finest Hour is a decent sampling of Williams' many stylistic hats -- swinging, scatting, balladeering, and blues-shouting. On half of the tracks, he fronts a big band (either Basie's or Andy Kirk's); on the other half, he sings slow blues or pop ballads (ranging from sublime to syrupy) with a small combo. Not a bad "finest hour," but if you're looking for a finer one, try Blue Note's The Best of Joe Williams. ~ Ken Chang

| | Rural Electrification Act Sing Magnolia Plus 13 More CD (2005)
Dean Martin MP3 Album
$11.39 Two of three principle players in this story, Sahlgren and Gregor, met toiling in the bins of the last good vinyl record retail establishment in Kalamazoo. Joining forces, they kicked around the midwest blowing minds and amplifiers in various musical endeavors, and a great many adventures unfolded in that time but, alas, their paths soon forked. Jaded, heartbroken, and destitiute, they parted ways to explore more esoteric paths. Some five years were spent randomly pursuing knowledge and life experience in the varied realms of country and folk music, noise pollution, elven mysticysm, outsider art, and deviant (political) intercourse. This produced a myriad of unique insights and experiences that left both of them more lost than ever before, unfulfilled and morally bankrupt. During Sahlgren's many travels and travails he met a strange little man named Chris Kolo who'd been playing drums and guitar in a grande variety of punk and cover outfits for beer, coin and enchiladas over the years. They were brought together to round out a synth-punk band that was obviously destined to fail from the get go. This band imploded around a bizarre yet entirely predictable love-quad-rangle, a bottle of home-made absinthe, a set of cymbals, and a complete collection of original Star Wars bubble-gum cards from the late `70s (really awesome). For six long months a quiet, grey calm settled over the Great Kalamazoo Valley, broken only by whispers in winter cigarette sessions and wistful lamentations for a defunct and fondly remembered drinking establishment. Michigan, in the early months of the year, often carries an oppresive air of blight with its wind. Boredom and restlessness and a hunger for sentiments almost forgotten come to the fore.It was because of this malaise that Gregor called Sahlgren, Sahlgren called Kolo, and Kolo got drunk with Gregor. Reinvigorated, the three united to pursue a mutual love of loud guitars, cranked up tube amplifiers and good lyrics. They are The Rural Electrification Act: endowed with the spirit of early `80s American punk and indie-rock, the pop glory of the `60s British invasion, and a deep reverence for early country and hillbilly songwriting. ...

| | Outlaw Order Dragging Down The Enforcer CD (2008) Limited Edition
Dean Martin music CDs
$13.05 Outlaw Order's long-delayed debut full-length, Dragging Down the Enforcer is bound to draw comparisons to Eyehategod, not only because of the bandmembers involved (most of whom also play in EHG) but also because of how the music sounds. However, given that EHG's last true studio album, Confederacy of Ruined Lives, was released in 2000 -- and given their status as pioneers of the whole Southern sludge-metal phenomenon -- that's not at all a bad thing. Clocking in at around a half-hour long, this concise album (nine songs plus an intro and outro) delivers on the promise of the hard-to-find Legalize Crime, the band's 2003 Southern Lord EP (one of whose songs, "Double Barrel Solves Everything," is reprised here). The music is a blend of bluesy, EHG-style sludge and crusty, uptempo hardcore influences, with plenty of guitarist Brian Patton's imaginative guitar riffing on display. Drummer Joey LaCaze's playing is more aggressive and upfront than it usually is in Eyehategod, and he plays with a great sense of feel, especially given the elastic, off-center rhythms that many of the guitar riffs are built on. Mood-wise, song titles such as "Narco-Terroristos" and "Alcohol Tobacco Firearms" sum up the vibe pretty well. The production is excellent -- loud and clear (but not too clean) overall, with a thick, dirty guitar sound that sounds better the louder you turn up the volume. All in ...
