On 2007's NEW WAVE, Against Me! mastermind Tom Gabel leads his loyal troops into strange new territory known as the major label. Once diehards get over the one-two punch of their favorite Floridian punk-folk act jumping to Sire Records and taking on a fairly straight-ahead rock sound, they are likely to find plenty of memorable tunes that both embrace and subvert the pop aesthetic.
Case in point is "White People for Peace," a catchy track that skews protest songs while showcasing the group's amped-up work with revered alt-rock producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage). Although the gruff-voiced Gabel and his crew may have lost some fans in their shift to the majors, Against Me! is sure to garner many more admirers with NEW WAVE, an intriguing album that features an outspoken outsider working within a system that he used to oppose.
Against Me!: Tom Gabel, Warren Oakes, Andy Seward, James Bowman.
Additional personnel: Tegan Quin, Andrew Seward (vocals).
Rolling Stone (p.90) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Tempos are up half a notch, and Gabel's loudspeaker vocals go for clarion boldness." Rolling Stone (p.108) - Included in Rolling Stone's "50 Top Albums of the Year 2007" -- "[T]hese Florida punks truly capitalize on the righteous anger they have long been known for..." Spin (p.97) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "NEW WAVE stomps like big-budget radio rock , all swarming guitars and gang-vocal thrust..." Entertainment Weekly (p.69) - "Against Me! has blossomed into a polished protest-rock band..." -- Grade: B+ Alternative Press (p.159) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[They] have focused themselves musically, providing a much tighter, rock-influenced record than the rest of their catalog. Replacement influences abound, with huge, anthemic, straight-ahead choruses..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "[I]t's uplifting, motivational, moving, agitating, honest, enthralling....It's also one of the greatest albums you will hear in 2007..." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.72) - Ranked #19 in Kerrang's "The Top 20 Albums Of 2007" -- "Chock full of political and intellectual power." Against Me New Wave Songs New Wave Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Unexpectedly Good I'd never heard of the band before when I read an article in a major music magazine calling this the best album of 2007 - So I bought it out of curiosity. I liked all of the songs on the first listen, then loved them the second time around - this is a truly solid rock/punk album, none of the songs are filler, each one is great. New Wave album
$7.09 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
New Wave CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
New Wave music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided ...
| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
New Wave songs
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines ...

| | Peter Gabriel Hit: The Definitive Two CD Collection CDs (2003)
New Wave songs
$23.29 Argentinian version features five alternative tracks to the U.S. version: "No Self Control", "I Have The Touch", "D.I.Y.", "Different Drum", and "Washing Of The Water".
Although Peter Gabriel received the greatest-hits treatment with 1990's SHAKING THE TREE, the 13 years following that collection made it clear that another, more comprehensive retrospective was needed. During this time, Gabriel recorded only two official solo albums, US and UP, but the avant-pop icon also pursued other audio/visual projects, such as OVO, his contribution to London's massive Millennium Dome exhibit. The two-disc compilation HIT pairs his post-2000 work with his pioneering songs from 1977-1992, and the result is a remarkable musical document.
